D16 is really powerfull engine that lets youy get not poor fuel milage, but this engine is not problem free! And this engine may damage transmission with wrong shifting, so Volvo offers D16 with i-shift only.

540(550) and 600(612) could be specified with manual transmission (vto2814b)

would be very interesting to see for a few years when guys in mines in indonesia will start to use e4/e5 engines

and when things like r580 or fh16 610 disappear

and i-shift is i think not capable to to this

manual transmission is not very strong only 2800nm in last 1.5gears (10,11,12)

seems to me that scania will be in big advantage since they have grso905 which is very capable for torque and load and even grso925 could be equipped with clutch so it also could be used in this

    Scania man Thanks this.

What load do they drive with there?
The Volvo fh700 is very popular in Norway and everyone I have asked love that gearbox. Yes there is a few that has had clutch overheated but when you ask the if they has read the instruction manual how to use it in hill starts and other tricky situations you may now what the answer is.

To give you an example of how the roads are in Norway. This week I have driven from Mo I Rana to Svinesund and some B roads on the way. Load about 30ton. Before I got to Mo i Rana i had an average speed of 74km/h
1200km later the speed has droped to 59km/h (totalt 2800km since restet) and that is after most of the Km are put on E6 the biggest road in Norway.
Truck was r580 (holy #### I miss that I-shift). Oh consumption rised from 33 before Mo i Rana to 50.1l/100km now.

i shift has only 14.94:1 overall ratio

    volvo 14speed manual has 16.41

which is big difference for pulling very heavy loads, and less need for clutch

also you need clutch pedal for tricky things since they have lot of mud look at video i put link from peter romberg there

there is difference in 3500nm in top 3gears and 2800nm in top 3gears

i am in contact with one guy from indonesia he is driver trainer and driver in one company he drives now new R series r580 with opticruise
and he says he miss manual transmission

    he drives 113 320 6x4, 143 450 8x4 , 124 400 6x6, 144 530 6x4 , 164 580, R series r580 and now redesigned r580

and some volvos but i forget which one

he says until now 164 580 was best

Trucks with the new high-output V8 have a single-disc clutch with higher clamp force. A reinforced overdrive version of Scania's range-splitter gearbox is used (12-speed with two crawlers), featuring gearwheels with double shot-peening and revised gear geometry. Maximum torque is available in the top three gear ratios, giving maximum driveability at road speed. Torque is reduced 5-6% in the lower gears, but still higher than anything else in the market.

so this is not so big reduction in lower gears
