Just heads up to everyone trying to place orders with peterbilt. If you order today you will get your new shiny truck in second quarter of 2023. And its confirmed 2023 will be the last year peterbilt will be making 389 . It will be discounted in 2024. The successor will be 589 so grab your classic before shes gone .

So Peterbilt won't have any "hood" trucks now at all?

    I’m guessing a 589 will be a wide cab with a hood.

If you read about phase 2 greenhouse gas emission requirements it’s easy to see that the hoods will have to be phased out soon anyway given how the points system works.

I dont understand then why would they have went to the new digital dash for the last year or two instead of just keeping the classic look? What was the point of switching to that?

    Kinda stupid, IMO...

Uses the same cab harness as the wide cabs now. My guess is that when they were designing everything for the EPA21 engines they figured out what they needed to make them work in the wide cabs with the digital dash since the updated 579 was already planned.

From a manufacturing standpoint I can understand why they did it. But on the other hand you have KW still building narrow cab trucks with gauges and EPA21 engines, so I think Peterbilt was either lazy or didn’t want to spend money making something work knowing that in a few years it would be phased out.

Field testing and conditioning. Stuff it in trucks that people want so they get to experince all the bugs that get ironed out before killing a beloved and desired model and look so when introduceing a new one with this planned feature it will be as seamless as posible to keep anger to a minimum. It also gets people used to the idea of a digital dash.

Remimber a LOT of people HATE plastic trucks, so getting rid of the hoods is going to cause backlash to begin with. Getting rid of hoods with a new buggy design that spends a lot of time as a shop queen is going to take things from angry and annoyed to outright hostility. Combine that with altering even the comfortable well known interior and even more people are going to balk. Putting this system in a current model gets people more used to the idea and helps them figure out the real world use problems without also shoving a likely unwelcome design on people.

I’m kind of shocked just because of how the shortage is going.. KW has still not officially announced any discontinuation of the W9 or T8 series. Are you talking about Canadian 389’s or US as well?

LONG LIVE KENWORTH! The dash and possible discontinuation of long hoods is exactly why I went with the W9L. It’s a shame and heart breaking to see these things get phased out.

My guess is sometime around 2025 when phase 2 is fully implemented. Also earlier this month they announce new emission standards for MY2027 engines.

    Siinman and OhNoTerry Thank this.
