hey all, i recently got a midland 75-822, i could hardly hear my buddy a car length away that had a hand held cobra., i was plug into the 12v, then later switched to batteries. both have a rubber ducky antenna which is bad enough, but two cars next to one another cant hear one another???
would a magnetic antenna help?

sorry for the newb ?s but im kinda surprised we couldn't hear one another that close when normal 2 way radios would have worked, why is that?
we tested outside of the vehicles and transmission wasn't very clear. with a magnetic antenna will it increase my ability to hear/ or communicate with trail buddies, both? will they be limited on the one end or the other without a better antenna? -

Definitely get a external antenna it will make a night and day difference for you -
It's almost all about the antenna.
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Tiny antennas on CB handheld radios are extremely limited, especially if they are used within the metal confines of vehicles.
The characteristics of 27 MHz are not suitable for such tiny antennas under such conditions. Such antennas can be used more successfully on VHF and UHF bands.
At a minimum, get three-foot magnetic antennas for your cars, i.e., the Wilson Lil Wil or the K30. That should get you a mile or three. Even better would be the four-to-six foot magnetic antennas out there, planted in the middle of each vehicle's roof.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
so i might go for a wilson 1000 antenna just for a little more range. Now i know tuning will be giving me best performance so i have two questions on this.
Do you recommend tuning an antenna myself?
If i just slap it on out of the box, is this going to give me poor performance? -
