Does anyone know the “new” process? I was grandfathered with the old rules since I’ve had my HZ for about 6yrs now. Just asking for a fellow trucker. I’ve read you have to take a course first before taking the actual test at the dmv. Is this true? Can this training be done online?
Thanks!

Here's a link to the FMCSA Registry of training providers. It looks like there are 196 online providers in the registry. Before paying for online instruction verify at the FMCSA website that the company you are paying is a recognized provider.
Training Provider Registry
This link says they provide the online training for $199 with instant results.
Take Entry Level Driver Training for your Hazardous Materials Endorsement Online. This course is approved by the FMCSA and meets all federal standards.. Drivers Ed Courses, Traffic School Courses and more.
If you are a driver with a current, but expiring HazMat ignore the above info and links. You only need the above info if you are a driver adding School bus, Passenger bus, or HazMat endorsement to the license after Feb 7 2022. Renewing a HazMat endorsement you have had before Feb 7, 2022 does not require additional training or online courses.Last edited: Feb 17, 2022
Woodys and slim shady Thank this. -
Just renewed my hazmat, did the online initial application via TSA, went to my local background check center, they did my prints, scanned my two forms of ID, took about 27 days to get my clearance back
-
The standard HazMat renewal process is still the same. In some order, take the computer test at the DMV. Fill-out the online form and make an appointment to submit fingerprints, when you get your letter from TSA saying you pass the background check take everything to DMV and get your renewed HazMat. -
Makes me rethink whether I want to get rid of the endorsement now.
Dang it. -
As someone who hires drivers who need haz, always keep it. I can’t tell you how many drivers I hear from that “let it slide off” their license last renewal and now are kicking themselves.
black_dog106, tscottme and GreenPete359 Thank this. -
I have only needed it for my seasonal winter jobs hauling heating oil and propane. I now have an agreement with my full time job to stay year round so I haven't used it in a couple of years. And truthfully my Winter jobs actually paid less than my regular job so I never got any extra pay for jumping through all the extra hoops other than being able to stay busy during the winter.
You never want to limit your opportunities, I figured if I did decide to move on from my current job there would be a good chance I would end up tanker yanking as I really liked running propane.Midwest Trucker Thanks this. -

First got my Hazmat about ten years ago. Test was awful! Had to get exact wording... yadda yadda. Took me 5 times to pass it.
Renewal couple years ago. Test was sane. Actually made common horse sense. But not easy. Passed first time.Midwest Trucker Thanks this. -
You can take the required HazMat training online. The ONE place I looked charged $200 for online training. There are almost 200 online training providers.
