Hi all. Pretty much an "east of the Mississippi" guy but I've been asked by a good customer to haul a load (dry van) to Albuquerque. I see a reference to a permit I seem to need, a New Mexico Weight Distance permit. Is this something I need to get before I go there or can it be obtained at a port of entry? Also, anyone know what it costs?
Also, would I be correct in assuming freight coming back east is gonna be pretty scarce and darned cheap?
Thanks in advance for any info.

You will need to get it before the POE. You can buy it on your phone while there, but they do not sell it at the POE.
Dominick253 and 48stater Thank this. -
They sell it at the ports. $.60 a mile i think it is. But you might find a road around. Theres one on the 40..cant remember the 10. If you somehow go in to colorado and they dont see a permit. They'll sell you one on the way out. Trinidad on 25. You cant buy them online unless your company has an account and you know the log in credentials. Unless thats changed in the last couple of years.

When you get pulled into the San Jon weigh station / Poe the guy on the scale will check your dot no and if you need a permit will probably call you in. Then you pay per mile based on weight but it's not too stiff. The last 3 times I've crossed was 1 waved through, 2 called in to pay and 3 was last week there was a sign saying go in the window, so I did.

New Mexico will issue trip permits at the POE.
Cost for permit is based on weight and mileage.
If you think you may have more trips into the state, you may want to have the company permit a few trucks for the state. go to the NMDOT page it can be done on line.
They do have a nominal fee for the permit, otherwise no travel in state, no fees.48stater Thanks this. -
Having an account and trucks permitted is A LOT cheaper then buying the distance permits every time you roll through. But the attitude of companies is we don't roll through enough to make it worth the while.

They always tell me about getting an annual permit and I keep forgetting to look into it.
Hurst48stater Thanks this. -
The annual permit is like $13 I think. Compared to $60 for s single trip permit across the state on 40
Dominick253, Hurst and 48stater Thank this. -
If you buy the annual permit you still have to pay the mileage tax on a quarterly return.
