Hi guys, first time here. Today my driver went to NM thru Lordsburg. We have apportion plates and IFTA. When he pulled thru the weigh station, the DOT officer told him he needed a single entry permit to go into NM. Since he is a relatively new driver he didn't fight him on it though he had the necessary paperwork. First time going into NM for us. Mostly we run AZ to CA and back.
I called the station to talk to the officer but he couldn't give me a straight answer as to why my driver needed a single entry permit if he has apportion plates and IFTA. Am I missing something here. I thought the reason we have apportion plates and IFTA is to not get single entry permits to every state we go into? We're planning on going OTR so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

NM requires you to pay for every mile you drive in their state if you don't have a NM permit. If you have a NM permit you have to file every quarter and pay for the miles that way.

I've never had to buy a permit for New Mexico when I go to Albuquerque.

You just have to park and come in and show your paperwork and then you're on your way.

Sounds like this guy was double dipping.

If vehicle is 55,000 or more
Weight Distance - NM Motor Vehicle Division
You can buy single trip permit which is expensive or open an account and pay by the miles quarterly.
Don't forget to submit report even o miles in NM was in this quarter.

Also fuel. Every gallon picked up is counted.

The NM weight distance permit has nothing to do with fuel. You are charged so much per mile traveled in the state depending on your weight. You can buy an anual permit and then file quartly returns, or buy a trip permit every time you enter the state.

Truck is registered for 45,000. So this is in addition to paying quarterly taxes and for IFTA for NM? Thanks for the info.

I think it's any vehicle registered over 26000, not 55000

    Snailexpress Thanks this.
