I have never driven a big truck through New Mexico. We used to drive over 10k under 26k trucks through there and we had to get these weight distance permits at the scale houses. I am sure they assess these fees on a semi also but if you have ifta/irp do you have to buy the permits or do they automatically charge you these fees when you file?

Reason I ask is I have to haul something to NM and my route won’t take me by a scale house but I want to be legal. Not sure if I need to buy permits online or what.

If you have ifta/irp you don't need permit unless you are over size/over weight, just keep track of the miles driven and file your quarterly ifta.

You need to register online for New Mexico.

Not true. New Mexico does a weight/distance thing and you need a permit. The annual is something like $12 I think.

You are correct, a Google search turns it up

[NMP] Taxpayer Access Point - State of New Mexico

I wonder if I stay on I-10 which is a federal highway I would still need this permit? It's a money grab obviously.

YOU have to pay the toll ANYtime you enter the state. The scale house will want to know where you're going and which way you're taking to leave the state. So have cash or credit on hand.

If your company has an account then it's billed to their account.

If you're not going to be rolling through any scales then don't worry about it. And don't get caught.

HOWEVER, if you leave on the 25. Colorado WILL stop you and make you pay the fee. If you haven't paid NM.

    Oldironfan Thanks this.

Snowy is correct. I've had to pay trip permit in Gallup before like 45 bucks.
And also once in Colorado at a scale going north from NM. Why are they so special? Bunch of crap.
