Hello, I'm glad I could be apart of the forum. Every so often I may have some odd questions as I'm in a weird mix of worlds.

But here's a general overview of my truck and my goals.

I have been looking to do a transmission swap and I've been looking at RTLOs. I wanted to do the automatic Eaton but I heard they are not standalone and would require a engine ECM. Which would not work with my truck. I planned on swapping the polarity for the rear end to keep it in high which will leave me with 4.78 gears. When looking at the ratio sheet for all the RTLO models it seemed that this would work out great for me since if the truck is loaded I have to keep the motor over 2200 for it to stay cool and make power. So the OD would really only be used in the flat land empty. Frankly I would like to find a B gearset that only have the .84 OD which from my research only came on the RTLO-14613B.

EDIT: If you all do know a standalone controller for the automatic Eaton's I would be all ears! I'm not afraid of shifting, granted my experience with an 18 speed was only once and it was more or less a test drive and the guy said I did pretty good never being in one before. However, I also use the truck for towing a camper and if someone else can get behind the wheel with minor instruction on how the transmission acts that would be a major plus. Also I wouldn't lose my center console when I go the the longer inline 6 motors.

Some people ask me why I just wouldn't go to a Spicer 6 or a Spicer 7 since they are lighter and a straight box. Well the Spicer 6 is rated for a good bit more than my current engine will end up producing. However finding one with a OD can sometimes be tricky. As far as the 7 speed goes there is two products people confuse. The lighter one is pretty much rated exactly the same as my current transmission and the one that is rated higher weights almost as much as a Eaton 9 speed does. I would also like to find rebuild kits radially available and my 5 speed is the same generation of that heavier 7 speed and finding parts isn't so easy. (I have the 14" fly wheel and SAE-2 bell housing which will work with them)

Then there is future planning and end goals.
I only plan on rebuilding the bottom end on this motor once. After that I am going to hunt for a DT530 (or rebuild a 466 as one) since my tuner works with them as well and the wiring harness is about 90% the same (The dins just have to be moved) Then I can use the same fuel system I've made and some other odds and ends and I will 100% be welding compounds on that motor. My goal on my current motor is only 300HP on the DT it would be 400-500hp. Which puts me over the ratings of the majority of Eaton 6s and Spicer 7s. I do also know the 8ll Can in these, it's actually the rear transmission support I'll be using on the RTLO. But I don't really have use for the double low.

There are also some things I would like but they are far on the list and I haven't really researched them hard. Just general wants.

I would like to convert the front end over to air ride, maybe the rear as well.
I would like to do a set of Bendix disk brakes. Outside knowing they exist and reading what people say comparing them to a same model drum, I have zero experience with them.

    My build so far. T444E.
Orion - custom single shot tunes from PHP running on level 6. (275HP equivalent on stock motor)
160/0 injectors from Full Force diesel
    Kc300X stage 1 63/68/.84 300sxe style turbo.
Homemade 4" Downpipe, 5" Donaldson muffler, 4" factory stack
    Bellowed uppipes
    910 valve springs
    ARP head studs
Dual Super Duty pumps - Removed mechanical lift pump
DIY Regulated return with fuel bowl delete (Set at 65-67 PSI)
    Hiflow Banjo bolts
    CNC Fab Hpop Lines
    Riffraff crossover
    Some Ebay Plenums

I also have a k31 off my drag truck that I'm thinking of using for compounds on this truck. But I want a new transmission and clutch before I do that. Especially since I haven't tried my hottest tune yet.

Here is the truck currently as it stands.

I think the problem you might run into with installing any of the rto or rtlo transmissions would be the bell housing and mounts. The 444 is a 7.3 powerstroke motor. The transmission is supported by a cross member and mount. Most eaton products just hang off the back of the motor. I don't know if you could adapt them. If you could, an autoshift could probably be wired. Eaton is very easy to get information from and it's not that complicated of a wiring process. The transmission needs to be able to control the throttle to make it work. I know allison makes a transmission that fits that application as does spicer.

Mine mounts different than the powerstroke.

I still use the 3 point that the inlines do and the sae2 bellhousing. I'm using the 8ll rear crossmember mount which is the same as the RTLOs. The most I may have to do is build a custom bracket for the crossmember. Since I only ever saw the 8ll's on the dt466s which set about six or seven inches more back. So the correct mounting holes in the frame may not be there for the t444e.

The engine bellhousing adapter on the Allison automatics are different than my current one, the automatics use sae-3 as I remember right. Plus a good deal of those automatics won't handle my eventual end goal. Stock transmission atleast.

And I can find sae2 RTLOs. I also have the correctly sized fly wheel. As I do believe Volvo uses SAE2. Besides the company that I'm going to end up buying the transmission from said they will locate an SAE 2 BellHousing for me even if the current transmission I'm buying doesn't have it.

But thanks for the information on the automatic eatons I'll start searching to see if I can somehow get it to control the throttle as well.

Here's a photo of the rear bellhousing mount. This is an older photo of when I was doing my up pipes.

I just tried to find it and can't. Somewhere I downloaded a file from roadranger that spoke of how to connect to the engine computer. I believe it is all done j1939 which I think is 1998 and later. I have had three autoshift transmissions and love them. I have an allison behind a t444e in a 4700 and it's a dog. For what it's used for its fine. I have a 4900 with a dt466 and a spicer 6+ and there is no comparison. I like the dt466 slot. The picture below is the connection to the autoshift gen 2 on my kw w900 with a cat c12. Good luck, I love great projects. Screenshot_20211003-072256_Drive.jpg

Yeah, my motor stock was the 195hp model and frankly it sure felt like less. I would pull down to 25mph with the trailer on a grade.

I haven't had the chance for another run on the mountains. But when I got all this done it managed to kick the tail out a bit on my dirt road. So I'd say she's coming along nicely.

The rpm governor has also been raised so now I can hit 70 with it at least . Before it was 2600rpm and 65mph gear bound.

Here's a video of it my brother made when I first ordered the tuner but I wasn't there to flash it.

All it had done was a 360 rebuild kit and a 5+5 billet wheel off eBay. Stock motor.
I wouldn't have towed in the mountains with that tune and stock. Ignore the squeak. It's that driver seat and I have yet to find the right spot to grease.

I do not remember all the SAE #s but I will give one example. We put a RT9509 behind a 3126. Could not find a larger trans with bell housing That would match up. Replaced a 5 speed Fuller. That worked great but you would probably want an OD as you are gear bound.
Can't help you with that auto and electronic stuff.

I have a 4900 that has a DT466 in it. It had a spicer 6+1 and 5.38 rears. I singled it out went to 4.11 rears with an RTO6613. I’m pretty light just a Autocrane mechanic bed 8k crane tools welder etc comes in at like 27k. Way better drivability than it was. You couldn’t beat it and get it rolling on soft terrain before the swap

I saw this forum for awhile, I feel like some many things I tried to get answered else where, probably here I could have prevented me learning it from hard knocks and scavenging for information seeing as a few of you have already done these swaps.

    Wore Out,
The only reason I don't want to do the RTO is my research said they get loud and warm in OD. What has yours been like? They do seem to be cheaper to find.

Also thank you Circle H, Tomorrow I'm going to try and call my tuner to see what he thinks about wiring it for an auto and if he could see any conflicts.

Thanks I did just did not thank that direction.
Addressing the question to excessive noise with OD Fullers that was mostly older straight cut gear models.
