Just a quick call for advice. one of the requests My FMCSA auditor is asking is, what my gross annual income is. Why is that relevant to a safety audit? What should I tell him? Is it really any business of the FMCSA how much money I made in my first year? Am I being paranoid? Thanks.

What do you stand to lose from telling him? At least if you can answer the question, it shows that you're keeping track of stuff and willing to comply.

I got asked for mine at the end of my audit. I didn't have it added up so it took me a few minutes to get a rough number. I didn't see it as a big deal, just make it easy and tell him. The irs/cra will know anyway and if you think they don't or won't share information with dot then think again.

They ask a lot of questions that may not seem relevant but are to them I guess. I would just answer them and move on

I guess what my concern is, that what does income have to do with a safety audit? Is he trying to use that info as ammunition for something else? Just trying to stay one step ahead.

I think it is so the fmcsa can figure out how hard to squeeze when you look at fines such as texting while driving (2750?) for driver and like 11,000 for carrier. 4,000 per incident for failing to take 30 minute break after 8 hour rule. There was another thread about that a while back.

It's not like that auditor is going to go home and use the info of your gross income to figure out new ways to rook you out of your money. It could also be to see that you make enough to maintain your equipment... who knows

Good points. That's why I ask questions. It makes me realize there are many ways to look at something.

Most likely it has to do with seeing whether income is in line with trips claimed in logs .. if income is very high for loads claimed to be run they may dig deeper ..

Yeah I think it's that and just to see how organized you are with your finances. If your finances aren't good/up to date, then you probably have other paperwork issues as well. I have every since load I've ever done listed on a spreadsheet with the broker info, addresses, rate, and miles. I can get my gross or info about ANY load I've ever done in about 2 seconds. If you can't give them a good gross, they might start digging to see what else you don't know or don't keep on file.

Did my audit last week and it was explained to me that it is for fine purposes. Something like you can't be fined a ridiculous amount based on your income. Some type of percentage he was saying.
