My significant other purchased a 2013 Peterbilt boom truck at auction recently, for use in Florida. This is his first venture at owning his own company, and intends to utilize the crane truck for construction (his current industry of knowledge being carpentry.)

I'm writing in hopes to find guidance and advice in regards to his next steps. He currently has his CDL permit, and will be testing this week in order to transport the crane truck effectively. Other than this, we are at a loss for our next go-to steps.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide!

Well he has guts. Don't hit anything and he will have a chance. Good luck.

Already certified on the crane, and just needs his CDL? Going to pull a trailer with it?

Yea might be smart to take a crane class. Oh check the current certs for the crane itself get crane cert as a operator
Ballsy move never running a crane before. Oh did you even see how much insurance you will need and the costs
Hope your sitting down when you get those bills

RGN, OLDSKOOLERnWV and MJ1657 Thank this.

I'm thinking it actually a boom truck and not an real crane.

We have a training sight up on I-77 just south of Parkersburg, WV. Think it was a few years after I got my CCO card they changed the law, pretty sure anything over 5 ton needs a certification. High rent insurance for sure. Got rid of our 'NICE' crane at work lol...... 50 ton link belt, one of our self proclaimed professionals not once but twice!!!!! Ripped the trans (13 SPD) OUT yes I said OUT of the truck. Owner fixed it and sold it after that. We now have a 15 ton manitex on a twin screw Ford Louisville, 8LL. 125 or 127' sheave height if my memory is right with both jibs.

Single axle? Twin screw? What is the GVW of the truck? Small details will help us help you. Lot of great knowledge here from many good people.

The crane operator certification won't be law until sometime next year, unless they delay it again. That being said, it's getting to where more and more places won't let you work for them without it. Bottom line is if you are going to own and operate a crane anywhere but on your own property, you need certification. I'm more concerned with his crane operating ability than I am his driving ability.

You'll also need a current annual crane inspection, along with your truck annual inspection. And don't forget insurance, you need good insurance for crane work.

If the crane is of any size to need a certification, you will need a DOT physical, even if it is mounted on a Volkswagen. The 1 physical will cover the truck and the crane.....
