Hi, I just came across this forum while searching for answers on whether I should buy a truck with no experience. I recently obtained my CDLs. I've had them for 2 months now. I am feeling sad because I can't find a job that doesn't require me to be OTR (Over The Road). I would love to go on the road, but I can't do it right now. I am available for any holiday weeks or the entire summer, as I have a child who lives at home but goes with his other parents for the holidays and summer vacation. I live in a different city than my family and the other family, and I don't know anyone here, so I don't have a sitter. I found a job, but they mostly operate Class B vehicles and it involves a lot of manual labor. That's fine, but they're only paying $23.00 per hour. I barely drive; mostly, we're at job sites dealing with chemicals, etc. I have money saved to buy my own truck, and I can also sell one of my cars to pay for any other expenses if I ever hit rock bottom. I am looking for anyone who is willing to let me work with them. I can pull from the ports, etc., or any company that will hire me for Class A. I can operate manual trucks as well. My plan is to get on with any company for the summer and work with them throughout the entire season. Do you think I made a mistake getting my CDL? Everyone is asking for 6 months to 2 years of experience.

Start with a larger carrier like Swift or Werner who will train you and suck it up for a lower pay for 6 months and then you will be happier in 6 months you can go somewhere else.

GOOD news: You've come to the right "place". Lots of good camaraderie & helpful, experienced drivers here!
BAD news: The overall market stinks out loud right now -- particularly for new drivers, with little or no experience.
My "vote" on your question above is: at this point -- you really don't know what trucking is truly like -- or even if you will actually like it, or not (since you haven't done any, yet).
Thus -- find out, first -- BEFORE you go to the incredible trouble & expense of getting your own tractor.
Start out with a reputable "starter" carrier (the above post offers worthy examples) -- that is set up to train/groom guys like you -- with a formal, proven, time-tested training program.
Otherwise -- you're really just doing a wonderful job of beating yourself up.
Last I checked -- that was/is NO FUN.

Don't buy a truck; the cost of insurance alone is enough to buy a nice home.

Most cement companies hire new drivers, but may not advertise that. If you apply in person, they'll check you out and decide whether to hire you or not.

UPS, FedEx, Amazon hire for local package delivery.
I'd put UPS as first choice. Start with package delivery, then can move up to tractor-trailers and get into the $170,000.00 annual pay range. -
Prime Inc. has a tank wash in Savannah.
Maybe get a job there. With that CDL , when the time is right, maybe start pulling food-grade tankers.
