I recently graduated with my CDL Class A. I live in McAllen, TX and already have my Tanker and Doubles/Triples endorsements.
Right now I’m looking for OTR positions, not local. I believe going OTR will give me more experience and help me grow faster in this industry.
I’ve been actively looking, but so far I’ve hit some roadblocks:
I also found a trailer position with UPS, but it would require relocating. They don’t pay for relocation, and while I’m single with no kids—so I could move—I’m not sure if it’s worth it as a new driver.
- I called Schneider several times and left messages, but never got a response.
- Prime Inc told me they’re not accepting recent grads right now.
- Roehl said they’re not hiring new drivers in my area—they want experienced drivers.
- Swift is still an option, but the mixed reviews have me unsure.
I’m reaching out for some guidance:
I'm motivated, ready to work, and just need that first real opportunity. Any advice, leads, or insight would be greatly appreciated.
- Are there any companies hiring recent grads for OTR in South Texas (McAllen area)?
- Would Swift be a good place to start, or should I keep looking?
- Is relocating for UPS worth it in the long run for someone with no experience?
Thanks in advance and stay safe out there.

UPS definitely worth it. Where is the location you're interested in?

Why not local? Most any steering wheel holder can be trained to hook up, pre-trip, hop on interstate +400 miles, pull in yard, unhook, hook, drive to truck stop, eat, sleep, return. It’s like driving a car. No backing up, all pull thru, unhook. Yard truck does backing. *except hooking up tractor you never back up*. Local tight turns, blindside backing…
I only do local now. IMO it’s much more stressful, greater chance to hit something. Badly set up roads. I have not figured proper way to cross RR track. From South buildings block site of track far back. Track coming from SE, going NW. I even went in other side of road a lot, turned Right to see out passenger window before tracks. Just too sharp an angle. So look really early a 50’ window about a block back. Then watch left but listen for train horn, hope cross arms, lights, bell works. 4x across that. Not once can I say I could see down tracks to right when I wanted. I don’t think a train could come after my early window to see, and be a danger before I am across. But I really dislike it. Crossing gear installed after many truck, combine, tractor vs train accidents. OTR you seldom come across that. I seriously am considering adding camera system one behind trailer, one forward, one to side looking slightly back. Just to confirm it’s safe. I moved steering, dang near kissed windshield. Not a good look.nextgentrucker and Pedro0101 Thank this. -

The UPS position I was considering is in Louisville, KY, which means I’d have to relocate. I’m single with no kids, so I could move, but I’ve been unsure if that’s the best first step right out of school — especially with no relocation assistance.
I’m definitely going to reach out to Swift and ask specifically about their refrigerated division, as several of you have mentioned it’s a solid way to build experience.
I had never heard of Danny Herman Trucking before this thread — and I didn’t know they had terminals in Brownsville and Laredo, which is huge for me since I’m in McAllen, TX. Same with Premier Refrigerated Transport — that was totally new to me, and I’m looking into both of those companies now.
To be honest, it was starting to feel like I was hitting dead ends everywhere I turned. This thread really gave me new options and hope. I’m truly grateful for all the insight and support. Thank you all for taking the time to point me in the right direction.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Thanks again for the insight. Really helpful.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Don't worry about the reviews if you choose Swift. Trucking is all about what you put into it. You give more, you get more. That said, if UPS will take you, it's worth consideration. Many drivers are financially successful there. The only thing about UPS is that when it slows down, drivers with no seniority are on the chopping block, but they pay so well that to me, it'd be worth the risk.
