I have a new authority, but most companies won't recognize me for another 3 months. Is it worth waiting out the 3 months? Also, is it legal to hold my authority, but work under someone else's authority?

I don't know if it's legal but you might could get away with it for as long as you have to. Some big 3pl's will work with you, TQL for one I think, and you will hate them and probably never work with them again by the time your hazing period is over with.

Personally? I'd probably try to run under someone else or drive for someone else while you wait it out. Due to the huge influx in shady carriers in the last couple of years most brokerage company's insurance will not use new guys for awhile. Many are up to 6 months now and some are a full year.

People telling you that most brokers won’t use you are just regurgitating crap that they have read online somewhere. I received my authority on August 19th and by the end of the day I was onboard with 1/2 a dozen. By September 1st I was onboard with 17 brokers. I run flatbed and some of the bigger players, ATS, TMC,TSH, JB Hunt and Circle wanted 3 months. ATS actually waived it at 70 days so I could start hauling for them. C.H. Robinson is the world’s largest broker and they will take you day one. Everyone calls them cheap and heavy but some of my best loads come from them. Find an agent that you work well with and they can become your dedicated broker. TQL has never done me wrong. I’m picking up a load for them Monday. 2045 miles @ $2.79/mile? If you’re running a van, Schneider and Uber Freight will take new authority.

There are many brokers who won't use new authorities, especially the ones with better freight. I ain't regurgitating anything I've heard, but my experience.

Yeah, I found brokers to deal with, but the only one I still occasionally haul for is TQL.

Yes I agree with you. There is a big difference between many and most. People giving advice to be a company driver while you pay insurance for 90 days are just wrong. Will some brokers not use you…yes. Will some of the best loads be out of reach…absolutely. But if you can’t find loads it has nothing to do it’s being a new authority.

With the downturn in the market, brokers may not be using as many new guys as they were a year ago too. I'm not sure, but it sounds plausible.

I do agree if you've already got your authority, you need to find a profitable way to work it.

Paying all the bills of a truck owner while making drivers wages only is a good way to go broke.

Agree with that. Pulling for 2.75 a mile will do just that. Parts, labor, insurance, equipment, food, etc is not staying stable. It’s getting more expensive. 2.75 may work today or in 3 years, but when it’s time to replace an engine, pay a lawyer, or expand your business, it won’t cut. Pricing your self with enough profits to tackle the future is important to your growth.
