Just get a head replacement kit for around $600, change it out on the motor. I also changed the coolant at the same time so it was drained

a small inch/lbs torque wrench is required, which I bought at Nappa, was the highest setting 24 DN? or something like that, which was the same as

the inch pounds the directions required, just enough room to torque the 2 different sets of bolts, when I pulled my head off the factory hatch was still

intact on the cylinder walls, the valve in the head is what messes up, next time I will just take it off and clean it

that is correct.just replace the unloader/o rings/gaskets.purchase parts at cummins.replace whole compressor if you are pushing oil into air system.good luck.

To test the compressor build the air to 100 lbs load the maxi's then pump the brake pedal down to less than 50 lbs , time it from 50 to 90, it should do it in 2 minutes, at 1200 RPM, three is the spec but that was changed for the Ford cab over junk trucks.
If it is pushing oil, after it is hot at 1200 RPM with the output hose off, compressor pumping, put a tag in front of it for 1 minute if it covers a 2 inch circle with oil it is worn out. wear gloves as the air out is very hot.

well ive got over 1M miles on it and I am planning on keeping it for a while longer. its not pushing oil, but it takes forever to build pressure. governor had been changed.

Wow, how much was it for the compressor for complete replacement? Do not have a ISX, just an old CAT C12. But thinking the Bendix replacement was $350 plus a couple of lines that had to be replaced & coolant. The same Bendix that was painted black & sold by CAT was closer or right at $600 though.

If it has worked for that long, just replace the whole compressor. Do you know what happens when the compressor locks up? A reman is super cheap insurance. Do it all at once, compressor, governor, dryer.

Head costs around 600.00. Aftermarket compressor cost around 650.00 and reman Cummins is about 950.00. I just put one on a customers truck Friday. Make sure you get mounting gasket for compressor and power steering and the two grommets for water supply. Also orings for fittings. They are not in box. All that was in cummins reman box was the compressor.

A brand new compressor takes 90 seconds or more to go from 50 lbs to 90 lbs, at 1200 rpm. with the maxi's released. To test if the compressor is worn out, I use a fitting connected to the outlet fitting, and connect it to shop air, then feel the blow-by out the vent tube.
If you have a million on the compressor, and it is taking a while longer than normal to build air change it, also have the turbo tested for passing air into the crankcase, on the compressor side.

If your air compressor is one of the early isx without the air tube fitting that would take fresh air from intake, it might be jammed with soot.

check this video here to see what I'm talking about, http://youtu.be/qMmNMLbdcG4?t=3m58s.
