the seal is not bad. It’s not leaking oil around seal. I just started getting a tiny bit of oil slinging out from the thread area. Called my mechanic and he told me that’s what happens when that bolt gets a little loose. The yoke did develop slight movement. He wants me to bring up to his shop after work one day this week which is 45 minutes away to tighten the bolt. I already bought a 2 1/8 socket and gonna do this by myself to save time. I have a 3/4 ratchet and a 6 foot breaker bar. My question is, how do I remove the u joint off the yoke. The u joint is pretty new. Looks like I can just undo those 2 straps on either side. Is it as simple as that and the drive shaft drops down? What’s the torque specs on those bolts when I remount it? Just want to be prepared so let me know if anything to look out for and any pointers. Circled in red the straps I’m talking about. Again, this is the yoke on the back of the front diff going toward the rear diff. The short drive shaft.

Just remove the 12 point bolts on the strap and the driveshaft will come off.
It's recommended when you reinstall the driveshaft to use a new strap kit.

Those straps are one time use. Order a new strap kit with bolts. The torque spec is stamped on the new strap kit. 125 ft lbs from memory on that series. Cheap insurance that nothing comes loose.
BUMBACLADWAR and AModelCat Thank this. -

Goodysnap. What would be the torque spec for the yoke nut?

Any Pete dealer should have the strap kit available separate. Driveshafts are pulled for tow ins all the time.
Dana DS-DSP40 yoke nut torque is 900+- 100ft lbs. To be completely fair it is near impossible to achieve this torque with a torque wrench and torque multipliers are very cumbersome given the location. Industry standard would typically be run it down tight with a healthy 3/4 impact. New yoke nuts are a good idea too. Or red loctite the very least.
I usually apply a small amount of rtv sealer to the splines when I have a yoke off as oil migration out the splines is not uncommon.Last edited: Jul 8, 2018
