    Hello everyone,
I've been reading through this forum for a few months now and have appreciated all the information that has been posted yet. I'm replacing my camshaft on a 6ts 3406e engine that has wear on the number 4 and number 2 injector lobes and associated rocker rollers. I'm thinking of installing a used camshaft and looking at options that would work with this engine. All the rockers look great other than the injector rocker bearings show some copper on each one and slight grooving on the rocker shafts. Just wondering what everyones advice is. I wouldn't mind putting in the 550 HP cam or even the marine cam for that matter if it won't negatively affect the engine. It runs like a champ, just trying to keep it that way.
The camshaft I pulled is 136-1157.
    Engine serial is : 6TS24359
I'll post some pictures of the lobe marking/wear below.
I don't know what the ecm file is or how to find it, I have a snap on scanner that will read the codes, but haven't looked for the file.
    Thanks in advance!! 6ts engine specs.jpg 20220612_144401.jpg 20220612_144446.jpg 20220623_115618.jpg 20220623_115621.jpg 20220623_115733.jpg

    used..???

how much difference for a new one?

can you be 1000% certain that the used one is in great shape? never been dropped?

did you measure each and every cam lobe?

i turned wrenches in my younger years, not big engines, only cars, but i never installed anything used in the engine, always new.

I would do an ATL reman before used. Rocker shafts and bushings look bad. Worn limits probably listed in manual or search on line.
Using a higher HP cam and leaving everything else alone could actually make it run worse.

Thanks, I'm with you there and understand. I was thinking that I would just use a used cam to get me by until overhaul time, but the prices aren't too far off the new prices from what I've found. Also I agree with you that it's hard to know the history of a used cam and what's been done to it, which is my main concern.

If I'm going new, I've been quoted for the 0R7653 from cat for a reman camshaft to replace the stock cam, or I wouldn't mind going for a better cam if it will be more reliable. I figured I'd replace the rocker shafts and injector rockers as well. They all look about like the picture. The intake and exhaust rockers look really good. Hardly any wear if any at all on those.

A “better” cam will have higher ramp rates and lift. More load on the lobes and followers, higher wear rates.

Just use stock cam. No big advantage to using higher HP cam unless you are chasing big power. Go with a new cam. If you rebuild in the future you'll already have a newer cam and rollers and rockers.

I’ve seen some ridiculous numbers out of engines that had the stock 5EK cams in them. Any of those, E’s or C15’s are capable of making enough hp to smash the #### out of everything in a highway truck from the 2050 clutch back without a cam change.

Thanks everyone for all the responses, I've been looking at new cams and have it narrowed down to a few different ones that all say they are similar or the same as my 136-1175 stock cam other than a few 550hp stock options I've posted below

So I can get a stock 136-1157 for around $1250 plus shipping from Pittsburgh power or a new HHP for $850 or so.

HHP new cam 0R7653 for about $900 + shipping

    PAI 391908 for about $1000

Raneys PAI 1879381 for $1200 shipped

I've seen the 1390538 camshaft listed a few times in the forums as the cam in the 550 hp stock 3406.

I guess basically they are all similar enough in price that if there is one that is better, I'd like to know. Also, HHP has all these new for around $850-$950 shipped. Just wondering if it's worth the extra going with the name brand camshafts.

I'll post a screenshot showing all of these cam part numbers plus a few more and maybe there's something there that is better that I haven't mentioned.
Thanks again for all the advice!!

I decided to pull the injectors to see what I have as well. Looks like I've got some different part numbers but they match up as far as I can tell. I'm not sure if they are 57's but it appears that they are based on the information I've found. Also they are missing the file number off the sides, so I was wondering if there is a way to make sure that the right file number is programmed into the ecm. The numbers on the top of the springs are 1189030 and the other one I pulled so far is a 0R4894.

Here's the 1189030 injector. Any Ideas for cleaning the injector tip/nozzle before re-installing? I already have new o rings coming this week.
