Ok, here's MY understanding, please correct me if I'm wrong.
A "gut wrap" is basically a wrap around a load to unitize it and keep it from spreading. You can either use a winch strap(s) or use a standard strap and attach it to the trailer, but either way it doesn't count towards your total securement for weight.
A "Belly wrap" is used on loads of three or more layers, around the bottom layer and helps you with forward/rearward movement %s and DOES count on your aggregate securement, though it doesn't help with minimums on length requirements. (number of straps per each 10 feet, etc.) Is that correct? Where is it specifically in the FMCSR? I've been combing over 393.100-110 and I'm not finding any specific reference to gut straps or belly wraps.
Anyone know where it is? or is it an aggregate of all the minimum requirements?
Need some help on gut-wraps vs belly wraps. Flatbed.

Belly wrap counts for 1 strap per 10' for the freight that it is securing. But if you have another layer on top of what you are belly wrapping you need an additional 1 strap per 10' for that layer. So always make sure your "top layer" securement satisfies the "2 in the first 10, 1 every 10 thereafter" rule, because belly wraps don't count for the "top layer", but the "top layer" counts for the bottom layers...
Diesel Dave, not4hire and johndeere4020 Thank this.
