Buying a 2007 48x102 Lufkin combo flatbed and would like to see how some have done their pipe stakes. It has an aluminum top and steel frame and I want them to be removable. Have seen some where they had to cut into the aluminum so they wouldn't be wider than 102 but don't really want to do that. I wanting to brace the bottoms down to the frame and plan on running some 1/8x 4 flat across the bed for additional support also.

all you need is a 4 1/2 ft peice of steel. channeled. with a plate bent at a 90 degree. and welded 6 inches.

the plate serves 2 purposes. it keeps the steel from going through. and acts as a stabilizer. when you put your dunnage on. you put it on the plate. helps to hold the steel in place and not flop around.

i've seen guys use 2 inch straps and some have used chains to secure each 2 peice set of stakes together.

people are creative in all kinds of ways.

If you dont want to cut into the rails , I think you only have 2 options. Im a lamo when I explain things so bear w me.

1- pipe flattened out & slide it into rail pockets or guys get about 5-6 feet of c channel , weld a tab to it so 4' are above the bed when you slide it into pocket.
both of these, youll have to chain the stakes together but I think youll still crack the alum pockets and might be flimsy.

2- I have seen guys that haul nothing but pipe weld what looks like a metal "U" and chain them to the bed. They look very cumbersome but you can move them from trailer to trailer. Im guessing you move other commodities though

I have 4 stakes made from 1.5 x 2.5 x 3/16 box beam. They are 4'6" and have a piece of angle welded on them to keep them from dropping through. I also drilled a hole in the bottom that I can pass a pin with a cotter pin through so even if they arent chained they wont pop out of the pocket. I have 2 5/16 chains cut to the length needed to tie them to the bed. my ;umber is the exact width of my bed (96"). Box beam is more expensive than channel but is far stronger and more dimensionaly stable.

I have a super solid set up. It might be a little too heavy duty as the pipes are very heavy for a lazy trucker like me. Sounds like what your talking about. Except the mount is cut into the rub rail. I'll post pics when the sun has taken its 10 off and gets back to work.
