The title is pretty vague, I know. I couldn't think of a good title. :biggrin_2552:

Anyway, I am in the process of getting this trucking thing going. It can be discouraging sometimes, let me tell you. Anyway, I am dealing with Michigan Works, which is a state government org, and their program No Worker Left Behind. It is a program that will pay up to 5,000 a year for two years for training in a high demand career. They consider trucking a high demand career, and will pay for it. The $5,000 will cover just about any school in the area that I want to go to.

Anyone have any advice for a Michigan hopeful? OTR companies that hire and will give a pre hire? Dealt with Michigan Works?

Hell, anyone in Michigan made it the hell out?:biggrin_2553:

Hey fellow Michigander. I'm also going thru Michigan Works for schooling. I start at Trainco next week. Whoever told you that you needed a pre-hire at Mich Works is wrong. They will pay for any school that is approved for training. I've not heard of the school you mentioned but down by Trainco is US Trucking School which is also good. I would double check with MI Works as to why they are saying you need a pre-hire. Good luck.

My Michigan Works caseworker also says I need 3 prehire letters, but don't let it make you lose any sleep. From what I've read, most prehire letters aren't worth the paper that they are written on.

While there is nothing saying you have to hire on with any of those companies, I think that it will be a little difficult finding a great company hiring student drivers in Michigan. Possible, but not probable. Just my opinion.

Last I heard, Schneider closed their school and is not currently taking students from CDL schools, must have experience to get hired there now.

Best of luck, I'll be starting CDL school in October I figure. :yes2557:

Yeah, the prehires are pretty much ########. But it is what I gotta do, and it sounds like you too. I am hoping on USA Truck and Werner at least. No one else will take anyone from Michigan. TransAm is but they won't give you a prehire until you are in school. I would like to work with them.

Worst case scenario is like I said, CRT or Roehl. Looks like you are right about Schneider. Bummer. Im trying to find some other good company sponsored training, but who knows.

I will get in this #### industry and Im not gonna completely screw myself in the process.

But, for now, Im gonna go grab a beer.

    cheers.... :occasion5:

My son just got out of Trainco about a month ago, me about 2weeks ago. Good school, you'll be happy there. He went on with CRST a little over a week ago, I start with Swift next week. Once we get some seat time we plan on running team, think it will be good to run with my son. We both went through Mich. works and didn't have to have any pre-hires, so check it out. We went to the school in Taylor, good people, work with you there. Good luck

Pre hires are not guarantees, they simply determine if you meet a minimum standard. Some Michigan Works offices require 3 prehires and some do not, that is determined by the MW regional director. You are not in the same region as the Detroit schools. MW is also customer choice, you can go to your choice of TDS as long as they are on the website and you are eligible for funding.

ITS is owned by the daughter of the ATDS founder (he's now deceased) and the curriculum is very similar. See if you can talk to Rick at ITS, he is a pretty straight shooter.

The DLEG website shows Trainco to have a 95.3 percent completion rate and a 93.4 placement rate. ITS shows a 98.1 completion rate and 90.1 placement rate.

Where did you find that on the DLEG website?

Honestly, I wouldn't even go to a trucking school that suggests you work for CRST. These are almost always trucking schools who do a very poor job at teaching you how to drive, and are overpriced. The reputable trucking school in my area (PDI in New Buffalo) has nothing to do with them.

Trainco is the best. Trainco is about getting you trained. They will work with you for 5-7 extra days for free if you fail your road or maneuver tests with the State examiner. The pre-hires are probably just an effort you must take by applying for trucking jobs, after you start school. If you are out of the job market for awhile and am applying at a 2nd trucking company months from now they will let you come back in for a few hours of manuever and road tests the day before your new-company-to-be asks you to take their road test as an application
