I need help with some Detroit 12.7 s60 questions i have. I have (had) a 1997 or so s60 model 6067pk60 500hp. A piston came apart and took out the block. Its in a 99 kenworth so it's pre egr. I am looking for a short block to build. The Detroit service center said I should look for a 2000-2003 6067bk60 500hp. I'm having some trouble finding a build-able core in that exact model. I have read that the bk and pk models were "premium" models, gk,mk,tk ect. were standard ones. Does anyone know what the exact difference is from premium to standard? I've also read that there were changes made in regards to piston, rod and block designs starting around late 1999. Was this true for all models or just the pk and bk models? And are the crankshafts the same from 430/470 hp to the 500? Could I take a gk model block and install bk model components to make it stronger? Sorry for being long winded, but really need help on this! Thanks!
Need clarity on ddec iv differences

You really should be calling Detroit back to get the right information. Not to insult or put anyone here down, but you need very specific information, not hearsay from a forum. Try to find your original engine serial number. That will be the key to finding the exact block that will be compatible.
snowman_w900 and wore out Thank this. -
Problem was that the original block was ddec iii with ddec iv exterior components. I dubbed it Frankenstein. The original serial number for the engine did not match the truck,or valve cover. Detroit reprogrammed it to a ddec4. The blocks I learned are the same, head, turbo, camshaft, piston and rods and programing are what rate it to 500hp. So I will be using a mk block with parts ordered for the final serial number given to my old engine. Thanks for the reply!

It's been a long time since i have been into a detroit. I do know for fact there is a big difference in blocks. I can't remember which is which but, as far as the different models some of the blocks have provisions for piston oil cooling nozzles and some don't. With that being said, connecting rods are different also. Some are drilled for oiling and some are not. Another difference that in our expereince detroit has been no help with, is identifying the different pistons. They look the same but have built for different compression levels. Most parts are interchangeable. The tone ring on the front of the crankshaft is different between the ddec III and the ddec IV. If memory serves III uses 12 teeth and IV uses 24 teeth. You can swap but you'll have to have detroit reprogram your ecm for the difference. Hope this helps a little.

Seems to me that very few people, including the Detroit folks themselves in some circles, seem to know jack about the specific differences with these engines! Where I pull, and where my dollars go it can be very important! Parts alone for my complete out of frame have totaled 11,000 bucks! I want the best for my truck and maintain the highest standards! In the rockies of colorado, I can't afford to be let down, I only wish I could find trustworthy individuals that could give real insight on the engineering changes, without a bunch of bulls#it. Kustom has had the most accurate post on this, and when I have more info on this build I will gladly share!!!!

I love my Detroit. I just had the ECM loaded with an awesome performance program.
Your in Colorado....Why not give Diesel Performance a call....?
They are in Grand Junction. I have been to their shop a few times...
They are independent and a really sharp bunch of guys...

Dan is the owner and an avid DD man. He has worked on my DD-60 engine and comes from a long history of Detroit Diesel work.
I know of no other that knows DD's as well. Tell Dan you got his info from "JD" - the Detroit Fan.
Best of luck! - If you get any relevant information, please stop back and repost for others (including me..)flatout99 Thanks this.
