First off I hope this is the correct place to post this. I'm not an expert here and I apologize if I'm in the wrong area.
I have searched for days on here and can't find my specific issue.
I have a 2007 volvo vnl.
About 2 weeks ago I picked up a container and the brake lights didn't work.
Checked the one next to it... They were super super dim (and probably a ticketable offense) but still lit.
In the last 3 days? I've hooked to about 15 to 20 different chassis and pretty much the same... Most are zero brake lights and 1 or 2 have been super dim.....
All the other lights work including the running rights... Whole back is nice and bright.
Turn off the lights and use a bungee on the trailer brake lever... Go to the back... Nothing...
Jumped the brake on the 7 pin with a wire scrap to the turn signal... They light up and I saw a spotter pull this particular trailer and they all worked fine when he was moving it... I hook up... Nothing...
We have 3 trailers in the yard.... Old dry van, old old reefer and 1 chassis with a cr england reefer on it.
Brake lights work on all 3 of them...
When I'm having this problem it's only out in the wild and never when I'm back at the shop.
The 7 way tester lights up fine... The cord is brand new.. Checked the one that runs from the back of the cab under the frame rail... Nice and clean... Not that old... No corrosion..
Tomorrow morning I'm replacing the brake light sensors on the pass through by the clutch... Which I was told was the first step and almost certainly won't do anything to fix the issue...
I was told to get a new lcm from volvo which also probably won't fix the issue......
This is kind of just a head scratcher and I don't want to spend $1400 on an lcm I can't return if it probably won't fix the issue...
Can't work without brake lights... Can't afford to not work...
Looking for any wisdom here..
I assume it's a bad wire somewhere but how do we find a bad wire when every time I'm at the shop everything works fine?
Replaced the relay for the hell of it.... Fuses are fine... And like I said..... When I'm there.... Brake lights are fine... Zero issues that can be easily seen....

Any play in pigtail in other trailers?
I’ve got shim mine.
I’ve just got a zip tie I’ve folded/doubled and put it in bottom and tightens up the fit, or my lights will dim on trailer sometimesRideandrepair Thanks this. -
And my plug is brand new...
Hurt my hand getting it out today because it was in there so tight.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
In the wild seems the key. As your driving around, components and wiring harness are vibrating. I dont understand what jumping the 7 pin means, i'm assuming it's somehow completing the circuit and therein lies the biggest issue with electrical faults. Hunting down where.
It's really hard to say, i'm not super familiar with an LCM but am guessing its like any other analog controller. The faults they throw can mimic wiring/harness issues. If you can isolate the LCM try smacking it around wired while observing the expected light function.
Hey i got real lucky on a Stanley Automatic door opener once and did just that. There is sadly no way to test many of these specialized controllers out of part swapping and it gets expensive quickly!Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

Trying a dash swap now.... Even today... I had 0 psi and my warning light going off right until I was pulling up to the shop door.... Then the thing kicked back up and once again... The gremlins went into hiding..Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I would remove the set screws on the tractor trailer pigtail, trailer end, and push that plug into the trailer receptical with a screw driver. Then check voltage at that wire connector when the lights are not working. You know the red one at he bottom.
If that is bad then check the other end of the cord the same way. Then what is next easiest? Same check on pigtail plug on the tractor side plug or where the harness goes the the firewall?
Doubt it is the brake light switch as there are two of them. Catching myself in possible error.
Do the brake lights fail on the tractor and the trailer?Rideandrepair and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Start at the battery terminals. Make sure all the connections are clean and tight. Do you have a battery disconnect switch? if so make sure all the connections on it are clean and tight. There is a power and ground cable that connect to the pass through panel on the firewall that supply power to the cab. Are the connections clean and tight inside and outside? The trailer cord has a male plug on both ends one end plugs into the trailer the other plugs into a plug on the truck, is the truck end plug clean and corrosion free? check there with a test light for brake light power. Check the simple things first.

it sounds like the problem is with your truck.. most likely a wire has come loose or corroded off on the truck side of the plug... if the cord is brand new then maybe those screws that hold the wires onto the plug is loose.. why the hell these shops want you to throw computer modules at #### without troubleshooting with basic electrical troubleshooting skills is what is wrong with these dum dums.. start at the plugs and work back towards the engine bay.. sometimes a wire is rubbed thru behind stuff underneath the frame where you cant quite see it.. you are going to get dirty but you got to follow that electrical cable every inch of it , if the problem is not the plugs... im willing to bet the cord is either rubbed thru somewhere under the frame or the problem is in the plugs.

Just the trailers..... Tractor is fine...Rideandrepair Thanks this.
