My questions may seem odd because I'm just beginning to learn about this subject. My wife wants me to look into a custom sleeper. I figure maximum 108". I need to educate myself on stretching the frame, weight on the front etc. I like the Volvo's with the Cummings engine and talked with a guy that actually will stretch the existing sleeper and customize the interior. I may be leasing on to Landstar (van) so it can't be but so big and I don't want to get into too much money...just want her to be happy riding (maybe driving) with me on the road. Can anybody help with comments or at least point me to a website or forum where I can learn more. Anyone think the show in Vegas next week will be helpful ??
Need advice on custom sleeper ???

It's far easier to mount a stretched sleeper on a longer truck. For a 108" sleeper, I would say that you'd need around 275" wheelbase. Good luck finding a Volvo set up like that. Google search ARI Sleeper or Double Eagle Sleeper... those are probably the two most common ones.

Thans for the reply...this is what I need ...guidance. The Volvo is my choice however because of the weight up front and the wheel base, I would consider something else. I'm looking to stretch an existing condo style because my wife likes the additional room in the cab (stand up, storage etc.) I know the Columbias have the condo cab as do the KW T2000 although I have heard they have had a few minor problems. All suggestions accepted as I am still shopping for the truck.

you are talking about taking a factory one piece cab/sleeper truck and stretching the sleeper. That is going to cost SO much money that considering you say you don't want to spend too much I doubt you will do it. a big sleeper alone, the kind you just add to the back of a cab you are looking at $70 to $100k for the sleeper. then add the truck.
the best way t do it is to go spec out a new truck the way you want it, with the wheel base you need and buy it and have it sent to the sleeper company. you can stretch a truck by cutting the frame and welding a new section between it but with those kind of wheelbases I would much prefer a factory original frame rail. you can have new longer rails put in a truck instead of cutting the old. -
Sounds too expensive. I was hoping to customize something just so the wife will be happy but not at those #'s. I may just stick with the Volvo 770/780 as it has a set-up that comes with a workstation and I can add the sink package.
Thanks for your help. -
truck paper has used ones. they are still expensive though. You gota realize those are mostly for the guys that do bed bugging, and convention transport, stuff like that where they litterally live in there truck and they may wait for a week or two at a time in truckstops.
also the weight really limits what you can haul and many companies have a maximum weight you can be to lease on to them.
I had a peterbilt with a 96 inch sleeper. it was nice but still didn't have a toilet or shower in it. Those need REAL big sleepers. I'd look at a Kenworth W900 or T660 or the older T600 with the 86" studio sleeper. I'm just not a fan of volvo and all there plastic -
Medman is right about the Volvo's being plasticy(sp?) And they start out pretty heavy. I am also not convinced that they are that much better on fuel. My co. Volvo seems to be averaging about 5.8, Id have to dble check to be sure. It seems that guys with KW T600's do better. Even have talked to a few O/O's who do as good or better with Petes, with a whole lot more style,IMO.I would not take the Volvo engine, unless it was the 16 liter maybe. And be sure you get enough gears. Mine has the 9 spd, and its not enough when your heavy and pulling any kind of grade.

I have been looking real hard at the Peterbilt 387 and KW T2000's......... (both condo sleepers). My wife likes the condo's. I've heard the T2000 had a few issues (electrical ??). I can't believe the 387's are as affordable as the Volvo's. I really never looked at them because I figured they'd be too expensive. I really plan to look at them more closely. Are there other places to looked for used trucks .... Truckpapers all seem to be dealers. There are probably a bunch of private owners looking to unload trucks. Also, anyone ever seen a site where wrecked (slightly) trucks are available ?? If I'm going to do sleeper work, a truck with some sleeper damage might be a good buy ??
Thanks for all the help. -
trucking forums usually have a classified forum. Ebay.
a volvo equiped like the pete will run every bit as much as the pete will. them volvo's are getting stupid expensive and the pete will be worth more when you sell it. -
Medman is sooo right!(again) But you dont have to take anyones word for it, just check the truck paper and you will soon see how much better a Pete or KW will hold there value! Seems like Volvo is in the middle, with Freightshakers in the rear, or maybe just ahead of Mack.
