I just had a delivery were the product was super thick like molasses.

I unloaded until the hose jumped, I opened the blowoff valve and it was blowing air MOSTLY, some product was being blown out splattering in my spill bucket like snot, but mostly air.

Well when I took the tank to the tank was they said 75 gallons was still on the tank.

I dont know what I could have done differently other than opening the dome lid and checking for heel and then getting the customer to sign off to pay for the heel disposal.

Any advice on how to get tanker heel out on thick products?

Dump trailer air… or if they have a yard horse disconnect from the trailer and have the yard horse lift up the front of the trailer.

pitch is your best friend in a rear discharge trailer.

And sometimes theirs nothing you can really do except let the tank wash charge for the heel…..

As cat sdp said. Also if it’s a rear unloader when it’s near empty drop the landing gear, unlock the fifth wheel pull up some and Jack up the trailer. Then just give it more time to drain.

Let it sit/settle for a bit maybe 20 min and open it back up again. Used to deliver what we called elephant snot to water treatment places, very thick stuff just took a while to let it drip down the sides and settle on the bottom, usually got most if it out. But never took back to tank wash we always just top loaded it several times

As long as the hose keeps jumping there is usually still some product going through with the air. I let it go until the hose stops shaking. On real thick product, close the external valve and wait for 5 to 10 minutes while maintaining normal unloading air pressure. Then open it back up. I know, you really want to get out of there but sometimes it's necessary to wait. I've been to tank washes that charge for excess heel. 75 gallons would have been a big bill.

I always felt that if a receiver got multiple loads of said product and didn’t provide a unloading spot with pitch .Or weren’t a dedicated load ie load on top of heel they deserved the bill for the heel.

Close external, wait for pressure to rebuild, open external... rinse and repeat until you feel nothing but air flow ✨️

As I left tankers, heels were becoming a real issue as the cost of even non-haz was rising.

The excess product still cost the receiver money and sometimes we were able to set up to drum off and return some of the sticky stuff.

One place was a rendering plant and they even supplied the drums for the tallow heels and would come and pick up the loaded drums.

All we needed to do was park on the sloped ground and wait.

The above mentioned Water Treating Compound, AKA Elephant snot [PG Version] was a nightmare to wash until we learned that mineral spirits was what Drew used to cut it off their stuff when they loaded the trailer and that stopped the momumental expansion of snot.

Any receiver of such thick products should expect you to close the valve and let it gather on the floor of the tank a few times to minimise any heels.
