A little background. I am 45 years old with a wife and two kids. For the past five years I have owned my own business...a tattoo studio...but it finally went under and has nearly pushed us into bankruptcy. I have to change careers and wish to become a truck driver. My father drove trucks his entire life and while I was enlisted in the army in the 80s I drove the 920 hauling constuction equipment. As I was nearing the end of my enlistment I enrolled in a truck driving school but before I could complete it I was assaulted by two men . I fought back and one of them died.
I was charged with murder, lost my case and went to prison for 17 years. It was my one and only conviction...now 25 years old. I was released from prison in 2005 and remain on parole. I can travel OTR as long as I'm back every 30 days to get a new travel permit and drug test.
I already know everything is against me. I already know it doesn't look good. To compound the issue I am nearly bankrupt because i had to close my business. I am trying to get on with Millis Transport and have borrowed the $500 needed. Do I even have a chance? I am in Texas near Ft. Worth. I need to get on with a company based near me and I need a company that will sponsor training. I have no other offenses and a crystal clear driving record. I dont care is I have to work for a bottom feeder for a year as long as I can drive. Am I out of luck? Should I give up on Millis? I also have a phone interview tomorrow with PAM but I haven't heard much to encourage me. Any advice?
Need advice concerning being hired as a felon

You have a murder rap, and on parole. No. In one word, no. You are not hirable. There is a not a company that will take you, none of the more reputable ones anyway. You should be looking at something else, seriously, not being mean or judgemental, but there is not a company that's gonna touch you.

However, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to first find out if they will take you on as an employee if you do graduate from one of their company approved schools. According to information, they will take convicted felons on "a case by case" basis.
Tyson Foods has some of the best pay and benefits packages for an OTR truck driver in all of the United States of America.
NOTE:
This is the ABSOLUTE LONG SHOT OF LONG SHOTS. Apply for a pardon from the governor or board of pardons of Texas. The worst the governor or board of pardons can do to you is to deny you your request. It is still worth a try.
Good luck to you!

you should be ok on your record most companies say 5 years/ 10 years old they will consider you. but with u being on parole still you may have choose tell them just make sure your DM(driver manager) or while in training get u home when u need 2. u say u live in TX do u live close to a main lane. sometime this will determine how often u get home. u pretty much got right already about starting at bottom. it never hurts to try u might get a surprise. do you have your hard copy already? if not don't go thru company if possible because you will have to sign contract for a year. but u have to do what's best for your family. stop thinking so negative its not as bad as u think!!!!!! go to website like www.bubbajunk.com, www.highestpaidtruckingjobs.com these sights u can put in a generic application with important information. if companies are interested in you application they will call u or email u. GOOD LUCK!!!

Yeah, the parole situation may be the sticking point. You might want to show up face to face with as many prospective employers as possible. I'm sure with enough persistence you'll find something.
On the plus side - after 17 years in jail you'll be more than well prepared for life in an 18 wheeler !! Good luck. -
The parole thing will be hard to overcome also getting a twic , haz-mat , and a pass-port will be next to impossible o get. But the real killer will be getting past those insurance companies...with a felony murder charge on you they will say they aren't willing to chance it.....the insurers have a lot to do with the hiring process.....
