    Hi,

I have not driven a commercial vehicle since 2005, but I still hold a CDL for the state of NC. I just recently found out that we were required to send our NC DOT Medical Examiner card to the DMV and they are threatening to kill my CDL. I had send them one last month that was going to be expired later this month. Problem is I just got a letter today stating that I need to update again before Jan 24, 2014.

I told them that I had no driven one since 2005 and marked on the form as EXCEPTED INTERSTATE since I didn't drive a commercial and who knows when I will again.

I had a accident back in 2005 which is the reason why I quit driving (hard to find a job).

Are we really still required to keep it updated even though I don't drive??? Used to I could sign a form to keep the license.

    Yes we are...

Go to a walk-in clinic that handles med-certs ($50 - $75) and submit it online or at your local DMV/BMV.

That is... if you still want to retain your CDL and/or Interstate status.

I am not currently driving. In Pa, I filled out the form (I don't remember which box I checked), and I do not have to have a physical. I called the dmv again to make certain that my license is ok, and they said that when I go back to work to just update my status. They said my license is in no danger.

Thanks, I thought the same. Smithfield DMV said what you did, but Raleigh DMV says I need one looks like. So it's so confusing weather if I need to get one or not.

I got those letters, and I emailed a copy in and I still got another letter from NC.
I faxed in a copy and went to renew my DOT physical several days ago.I went by the DMV in Albemarle where I know a lady who works there and she took care of it for me.I know they are overworked and screw ups happen.I just wanted a verified way to turn in my copy.

I don't know how the dmv system is set up there, but I called the state office that handles licensing. If there would be a problem, it would come from their office.

call 919-861-3599, this is the CDL Medical Certificate, Division of Hearings number. You need to fill out form CDL-5, Application/Certification for Commerical Drivers License.

Fill out the top, and then initial lines 4, 5, 6. Sign and mail it in.

    This is for NC.

You can keep your CDL and you do not need a current Medical card. This informs the state you wish to hold the CDL, but without a medical card.

I filed my letter to NC in 2012. I recently called them and I still hold a CDL class A. NC will not downgrade unless you fail to register.
