Hello Truckers Report, seems like a great forum with people that have great advice and a lot of experience. I'm very determined to get my class A CDL and become a trucker. I'm a USMC vet that does not have access to VA benefits to pay for CDL training. I would like to keep from driving OTR, ideally I would like regional. I have a clean license. However, I do have a felony, but I was able to receive a TWIC that requires a background check by the TSA and I am currently employed as a 3rd party inspector for the DOT.
I have found many big companies that will pay for my CDL class, but require one year OTR afterwards. Does anyone know of a company that will be willing to pay for my CDL and allow be to stay regional?
I'm located roughly 30 miles from Greensboro, NC. I just moved up here from Denham Springs, LA.
NC Company that pays for CDL

#1 - Some foodservice companies will hire you with only a cdl permit, then you work OJT with another driver until you get the hard copy cdl.
The foodservice companies you must have the cdl permit and then apply for "driver associate" or "driver helper", they're both the same.
Reinhart Foodservice
McLane Foodservice
Sygma Network
Gordon Foodservice
Performance Food Group
Sysco
U.S. Foods
Not all foodservice warehouses/terminals offer this, but many do. You'll have to research online and apply online only.
#2 - Another way is to go through the Goodwill Industries which will pay for cdl school, then at graduation you can hire on with any company you want to. Goodwill has a website just for their cdl program.
#3 - Google " WIOA Program North Carolina" and maybe the state will pay for cdl school.
#4 - Veriha Trucking has their own cdl school and has weekends home. The school is in Wisconsin, but they pay to get you there and provide lodging and meals while there. This is a regional company.
#5 - Some companies offer a dock to driver program and may even pay for private cdl school:
ABF
YRC CDL School
Southeastern Freight Line
Not all terminals have the "dock to driver" program or the free cdl school program. You'll have to do some Google searches to see if any in your area participate.Last edited: Apr 25, 2017

Chinatown Thanks this. -
Millis Transfer has cdl school in Eden,NC
They stay on the Eastern half of USA. Pretty good company from what the drivers say. Probably worth a phone call and get more information.trey0311 Thanks this. -
I saw recently that Averit or south eastern were taking on new drivers.

I found this on the YRC Freight website. www.drive4yrc.com/training-programs/
Obtain your CDL
Just because you don’t have your CDL and required endorsements doesn’t mean you can’t work at YRC Freight. With the right attitude and work ethic, you could be hired to work on the dock while studying for your CDL written and road test.
ABF has a similar program.trey0311 Thanks this. -
I'm in Watkins shephard right now in conover nc orientation. A guy here got his cdl school paid by them. I'm straight out of school and I've got a dedicated route from here to nj where I'm from
