I'm currently Active Duty Army and I'll be getting out soon. I'll be going to the National Guard as an 88M (truck driver) and then going to CDL school. I'll probably be signing on with swift because they accept new drivers. My questions are: Do companies consider your one weekend a month with the National Guard as home time? Do companies actually honor that you're serving and can definitively get you home on time to do your duty?

Im not sure how it works at Prime. For sure they get you to all your National Guard commitments. I was at the terminal when an award was presented by the National Guard to a dispatcher when one of his driver's nominated him for his commitment to helping him get what he needed to get done during his duty periods.

However, I can't say for sure if that duty time is counted against your home time.

Im not pushing Prime, I enjoy working there. They go out of their way to recognize employees and driver's who are veterans. Do your research, there are quite a few companies that are veteran friendly. Some more than others.

I did this with roehl. Was worth it and school was paid for.

guard time cannot be counted as home time. But you don't have to log it even as a 88m

There are dozens of companies that hire new drivers. Some companies like Maverick have weekends at home anyway. I think TMC honors weekend drills for reservists. Many do. Millis Transfer is another one to look at. Where do you live; maybe others have some ideas to help you.

Not exactly. Last year When I asked TMC if they would get me home for my drills, the recruiter was honest and told me that I wouldn't make a lot of my drills. Next week is my last drill in the guard. Mostly Likely I won't reenlist take a year off and see how things work out with Maverick if they hire me.

Think hard on that; with downsizing you might not get back in later. You won't regret it when you're old and gray!
I've known guys, some I went to high school with, in the reserves. Back then if you missed 2 drill weekends they would activate you for 24 months. If they got laided off or had an MOS or NEC number the military didn't need, they wouldn't let them on active duty; so they would miss a couple of drill weekends and get activated that way. One of my high school classmates finally got his 20 yrs. in by doing that. Military isn't as loose now as it was back then. It used to be really laid-back.

Check with Millis Transfer if it doesn't work out with Maverick. Someone else needed a weekend off each month for some other reason and Millis OK'd it.

Drill days ARNT logged as on duty not driving. It's off duty.
