Been using this site for a lot of research, so want to say thank you for everyone's involvement on here and passing along a lot of info. Looking to get into trucking, specifically flatbed, right after the New Year so trying to educate myself as much as possible. Anyway, I looked up my home location on the Roehl site for current positions and it shows openings for Florida in the National Flatbed Fleet. And when I read the description, it had the following write up included:

"When you join this fleet, you'll be flown to one of our terminals in the Midwest, where you'll drive for three weeks and then you'll be flown back for your week of home time."

Here is my question...Is freight that slow for Florida that the company finds it is cheaper/necessary to fly me home every three weeks for my hometime instead of routing me somewhat close?

That is indeed interesting. I don't know the particulars but one of the Roehl recruiters would have them; suggest you give them a call. It is true that Florida is one of the slowest places in the country for freight volume. It could be that this is a very creative/thoughtful way to include Florida residents in the driver pool; if it works and makes sense financially, why not?

No what they are saying is that they will fly you in for your training, than fly you home for some hometime before linking you up with your driver trainer. After you complete phase 2 with your trainer and test out, you will be issued your own truck and at that time, you will be routed home with your truck for your hometime

I was thinking that to begin with, but it just came across weird that they took the opportunity to write that up in the job description. And I know they are different divisions, but none of the others had that in their write up. I know I could possibly get an answer from a recruiter, but was just curious if anyone had heard anything about this without having to listen to the "script" that I always seem to get read to me when I have called. :biggrin_25521:

I work for YRC Freight and we haul allot of freight to Florida but not much coming out of Florida. Usually it costs more to ship to Florida and we put empty trailers on the train coming out of Florida just to free up equipment and get it out of there. You should know this you live in a retirement state.

I understand the "retirement state" deal. Luckily for me I am in the Northern portion, so there are more opportunities available in my area compared to the Southern portion. But its not like the state is dead. My office faces I-75 and watching traffic is the majority of my day! The flow of trucks heading North is just as much as South. And talking flatbed loads, haven't gotten my x-ray goggles in the mail yet to check the boxes rolling by.

i tried to go to Florida to visit my grandparents for thanksgiving last year. my FM laughed her ### off at me and i spent the holiday in Tucson, AZ. i'm not quite sure how it works out there if you live there.

but thats what she told me, that i could get there with freight, but there wasn't a hope in hell for me getting out of there. i drove in the flatbed national. they said i'd probably have to reefer there.
