I realize the subject has been discussed previously but not finding anything recent.

I am interested in driving for a NASCAR team, either hauler or motor coach. I have the license, endorsements and experience to do the job. I have averaged 300+ days travel each year since 2011 in concert touring and motorsports racing. I understand both jobs and what they require, in fact I had interviews for these positions in the past but didnt really have the experience then to be a serious consideration. I know there are several former and current drivers that post on the boards here. I m hoping someone has current info about openings or right approach to have the best shot at one of these positions.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I drive for a top tier Indy Car Team and have driven for other Race Teams the past few years. My experience has been that say 98% of the time you need to have a connection or contact inside the team to get a foot in the door, the other 2% of the time you need to be persistent and get lucky. That is just my experience from being around so take it for what it's worth.

A couple notes, in order to work for any NASCAR team you absolutely NEED to live in the Charlotte area with the exception of Front Row which is in Colorado. If you want to work for an Indy Car team you should live in Indy, with the exception of Penske.

Another note is that the amount of time you actually drive a truck is very small, you really aren't a truck driver you are a Team member with a CDL. When you do drive you will mostly be team driving, not many haulers stop at truck stops and all that, you will mostly Team drive from the shop to track if the track is over 11 hours away. There is very little down time when you are on the road, time is very short and you always be the last consideration, your job is to get the rig from shop to track ASAP with zero issues or delays.

The rest of the time you will be loading, unloading, cleaning, fixing, setting up, tearing down, cleaning some more, waiting, carrying tires setting pressures, carrying more tires, cleaning, and more tires, cleaning and then loading and then driving. It is not really a "truck driver' job to be honest. It is a fun gig if you love racing but it is not very glamorous, you will rarely see an actual race unfortunately.

So back to your original question, how do you get a job with a race team if you don't know anyone. Make a great resume, make about a thousand copies, and then get a map online of all the race teams in and around Charlotte, Concord, Huntersville, and Mooresville. Take your resume to every single race shop and ask to speak to the Transportation manager. 99.9% of the time you won't get past the receptionist and will have to hand your resume to her. Don't give up, be polite and say "Thanks so much!". Repeat times a hundred.

Don't focus on just the Sprint Cup Teams because it is almost impossible to get right on a Sprint Cup Team, you will have a better chance at getting on with a Truck Team or lower Tier Team or a Vendor like Racing Radios, Good Year, or someone like that. Drop off resumes and be professional and keep trying. Try to make a contact somewhere, racing is a very small industry and it is all about WHO YOU KNOW. Get to know someone if you can.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any specific questions. Good Luck.

That is a pretty decent map to most shops, some are not current but that gives you a starting point. Start in Concord, you can hit Chip Ganassi, Roush, Stewart Haas, Hendricks, as well as a few vendors and of course NASCAR HQ is there.

Then head over to Huntersville where the Joe Gibbs Teams are, the go up 77 to Mooresville and hit Kyle Busch, Penske, Petty, JR Motorsports, and a whole bunch of Nationwide Teams like Kasey Kahne, Truex, etc. Michael Waltrip is gone so skip that.

After that you can head over to Welcome and hit up RCR. In those areas are also a slew of vendors and lower tier teams. That is a great start anyway.

    I agree,.. above and beyond.

I am heavily into drag racing, x275 class,.. but love almost any kind of racing and always wondered how those guys made it to that position and what was required of them.

Very informative, to the point and I appreciate the information.
