Had an issue with my n14 celect plus taking 10 seconds of cranking to start. I checked the fuel system for leaks and it was solid. Checked fuel shut off and it had power 12v. Put pressure gauges on the the test ports and checked cranking pressure. Truck always fired once fuel pressure reached 25psi or above was just taking a while to get there. So pressurized the fuel tanks and tried to start it but still a hard start. What finally worked was supplying fuel at 25psi to the filter housing . The darn thing fired in 2 seconds or less every time. Hooked everything back up normal and it fired right up. Waited overnight and it fired right up. This may not be a solution for you but it's free to try to see if it works on your n14. There are several other possibilities for hard starts on n14s so it's best to go with the free stuff before just swapping parts.

My two N14's usually have a hard start when I use red Baldwin fuel filters. What filter do you have?
-
I have noticed that certain fuel filters can cause issues.
The Cat C15 I use took 45 seconds to get pressure on the gauge. Truck still fired right away but 45 seconds for the needle to get up.
Threw the Donaldson filters out, installed Cat filters.
Fuel pressure went up right away while cranking before the engine fired.
Much better. -

There's a quad ring with replacement fuel filter that most of the time is not installed. Which creates this problem.

Fuel check valve at the ECM sticks, lets fuel drain back, hard start. Common on N-14's do a search.

There is a check valve on the left side of the cooling plate which the computer is mounted too. Its in the fitting. You can easily take the line off and pull the fitting apart to check if anything is keeping it held open when not running. Sometimes but not always there is a check valve on the fuel pump at the back on top. If so you have to pull off the electric solenoid off the pump to get it out.

Generally if a check valve is bad it will start and run then stop. Then crank some more and run. I've had that problem before. Current crank time is appx 1.9 seconds. Granted my 3406e cranks about half a crank and she's running...

Not on the N-14 check valve. I owned my N-14 500 20 years, and in that time replaced it twice. It's a simple ball and spring, when the fuel pump runs it flows. When you shut the engine off, the ball doesn't seat, from either worn spring, or tiny chip on plastic ball, dirt, etc. Fuel drains back, you have to crank it to get the fuel back up. Simple 10 minute fix. Very common problem on the N-14
wore out Thanks this.
