Hello! I have a '07 Volvo cummins engine. Earlier today the light for check climate unit light kept turning on but now my rpm gauge won't work at all. I am currently on a load. Is it alright if I continue to keep going? Is there any negative side effects on traveling with a broken rpm?

Please and thank you to anyone who has any advice.

    -Dave

As long as the speedo works you should be able to continue to someplace to get it checked out. Since most gauges are now electronic, I would get it checked as soon as possible. It might be the precursor to a larger problem that could leave you stranded.

But would this have negative effect on my motor until I reach my destination?

Thank you so much for your reply!

No it wont have any negative effect on your engine. It is just a gauge that tell you what RPM's your engine is running. I guess the only negative effect will be for you to see when you are going to shift your transmission. Just don't over rev your engine and you'll be fine.

Are you saying after 5 yrs, you have no idea if you're doing 1500 rpm or... 4500 rpm by engine sound?

yes, it could have a negative impact if not fixed. and i say COULD.

your ecm needs to know what cylinders to fire at what time. it does that by using a crank angle sensor and a cam sensor. and i beleive, the tachometer also works off the cam sensor. at some point and time. the truck may stop running. if the tachometer works off the same one of the sensors. and that particular sensor completely fails.

so i say, COULD have an impact.

i drove a 99 pete with a cat that failed tachometer. 2 months later it quit running. but you have a cummins motor. you may not end up with the same problem. you might have 2 seperate sensors. or it may just be a completely different problem not related to the sensors.
