I'm hauling my first OD load this week from TX to FL. Going through TX, LA, MS, AL, and FL. Have read before some states require OVER SIZED signs and others require WIDE LOAD signs. The load is just 9.5 wide. Legal height and length. Any information about signs and flags and any other info that would be helpful would be appreciated. Also seen in LA I have to drive 55. Is that normal?
Thanks
My First over sized load

"Oversize Load" will cover you everywhere. They are the only signs I have right now, and not had an issue in all the years of pulling OD stuff 90% of the time.
There are a few states that will lower the speed for OD/Permit loads.
Az is 55 for permit loads, Nm is 65, Mo is 10mph under the posted limit, and so on.
At only 9'6" wide though, you should have an easy time of it. Just be sure to read the provision sheets, as the likes of Ms will only let you run 1/2hr AFTER sunrise, until 1/2 hr BEFORE sunset. Its normally 1/2hr before sunrise to 1/2hr after sunset in other states BTW.

Read your permits very carefully and as Martin said just use the "oversize load" sign. Flags are kinda different in every state as you always usually have 4 and 2 always go on the rear corners of the trailer but then some states want the other two on the front of the truck at the bumpers and some are ok with at the front of the trailer on both sides. Also, some states reqire flags at the widest points of the load in addition to the others which is a good idea anyway if they dont require it.

As to the speed, the cops do know what the speed is listed on permit loads. If you get caught running above it, remember, not only do you face a speeding citation and CSA points, if an inspection report is filed, but your permit CAN be revoked as you would have violated a provision of it. Not saying they necessarily will revoke it, but they can and then you'll be up that well known creek, unable to move until a replacement permit is issued.Dorsey Thanks this. -
Sorry forgot about the flags.
As a rule, I flag the 4 corners of the load at the widest points, 2 on the front bumper of the truck, 2 on the rear of the trailer. Truck and trailer ones at a 45 degree angle. I also run the strobes regardless of permit requirements if it is over 10' wide. Below that, I follow the permit. The likes of Ia and Il require strobes/beacons on ANY permitted load, so that means that if you are just overweight, you need strobes/beacons!
Read those provisions!!

Throw out any wide load signs you have. Florida and GA. will nail you for improper signage with a wide load. They both gave me warnings for it, though I was wide and not oversized. Was told only use oversize banners from both.
Also do not run a beacon light in GA without a beacon permit sticker from GA which goes in your passenger window. Or best to get the permit sticker if you plan on doing more wide loads through GA. I think it's only a couple dollars but take couple of weeks to get in the mail. -
You can order the Ga. online now I believe. Plus show the reciept and it will make it vaild as you have it ordered..
I have mine on the drivers side vent window. Never had a hassle about it. Plus they can see it when they walk up to look at permit.
Plus, if you break windshield they are a pain to take off and not rip..Dorsey Thanks this. -
Thanks for the help! Dropping off in the morning. It was a good first OD load at only 9.5 feet. Easy run and learned some new stuff. Here's a pic of it. (little box).
