    Hello,

My name is Chris and I want to become a truck driver. I want to join a company with CDL training since I do not have the funds to pay for school myself. I have a DUI that is now 4 years and 3 months old. Are there any companies out there that will hire me and accept me into their training program? Yes, the DUI was a stupid, stupid mistake on my part. I do not have any alcohol issues. It was a lapse in judgement and Ive regretted it ever since. I am just unemployed and I want to get working again. I really hate not having a job. It sucks!!!

Any info that any of you may have on this subject would be much appreciated!

    Sincerely,

    Chris

Most carriers who accept those with a DUI require a minimum of 5 years. Some require 7 or 10 years. Some carrier put their minimum hiring requirements on their websites or on some of the trucking forums. You can also call those that you are interested in going to work for and talk to recruiting or their safety department.

What I heard today with a reputable comPany recruiter face to face at school. They require atleast 5 years out. BUT.... I would try Werner, Swift, and western star (?). Falcon, and one another (I forget the name) might hire you. With your record, just get your foot in the door, get atleast 6 months experience - a year, and you can be choosy. Best of luck bro!

Also, Chris. This might not be the job for you if you are just looking for something because you are unemployed. This is a lifestyle that requires a LOT of thought before you take the plunge into it. Give it alot of thought! Best of luck.

This is oh so true... I am 17 years in will be 18 this winter and If you think this is a get a job thing.. Don't do it.. Find a good job go to school and be something else.. Now if you want to drive a truck and have put your stupid (we all did stupid stuff) stuff behind you give it a go.. Just remember when your DL goes from a C... To an A CDL.. You have to watch what you do all the time everytime.

Agreed. You become a professional when you get your CDL. Your BA count goes down, tickets are no longer a "oh I'll take a traffic school and get my ticket erassed. Everything sticks. You are held accountable for everything. I know, I'm just a lowly student, but I have done hours of research, and have a decent idea of what I am typing. Can't wait to hit the road, & I am extremely grateful for this forum, and everyone on here

I had the same issue back in '05 with a DUI that was just under 4 years old. Was told by the school recruiter that there were plenty of companies that could hire me. But, after I got my CDL, no one would unless the DUI was 5 years or more. So, in the time I was waiting for my DUI to get older or fall off my record, I got married, started a family and 7 years later was finally able to get a driving job. I had to attend a refresher course and went to one offered by CRE. I also stayed with them long enough to get some decent miles and experience in so I could move to a better company.
