Wow what a mess. I wonder if the driver of truck # 3 got distracted by the first wreck and crashed?
tmb0507 Thanks this. -
Note the time.
Do they still have the rest areas shut down through there ? -
No rest areas are open but, you can only park about 6 trucks in there and they fill up by 2pm!!!

That's about 10 miles south of Wytheville. I always hated that section of I-81 from there up past I-77N is always like a mad house of crazy driving. Though there is probably other issues they do need some serious work on I-81 through VA.

"Moments later a second tractor trailer traveling north on I-81 ran off the left side of the road, struck a bridge and crashed below on Route 90. State Police say it caught fire immediately. The driver of the tractor trailer was killed, and a passenger in the sleeping cab of the truck was ejected.
He was flown to a nearby hospital and is being treated for serious injuries. The names of the victims have not been released." -

[h=1]Police release IDs of people killed in I-81 crashes in Wythe County[/h]
Virginia State Police have released the identities of the victims killed in a rapid succession of crashes early Tuesday morning on Interstate 81 in Wythe County.
Tanya D. Mann, 56, of Zircornia, N.C., died after her 2000 Lexus SUV struck an overturned tractor-trailer on the southbound side of the interstate near mile marker 60. The tractor-trailer had been heading north when it ran off the left side of the road, overturned and fell across the median and into the left southbound lane.
Minutes later, a second northbound tractor-trailer struck a piece of damaged guardrail that had landed in the roadway after the initial crash. The second tractor-trailer ran off the left side of the road and into the median before striking the edge of a bridge over Virginia 90/Black Lick Road. The tractor-trailer fell onto the roadway underneath the bridge and caught fire. The driver, 34-year-old James R. Anderson of Decherd, Tenn., died at the scene. A passenger, Jeremy W. Johnson of Tracy City, Tenn., was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer involved in the initial crash suffered minor injuries. Philip O. Emiabata, 53, of Pflugerville, Texas, has been charged with reckless driving.
