I'm looking for an advice and proper way to move my truck cross country.
I have truck and trailer sitting on my property and needed to be moved, along with my personal belongings including my car that I plan to load to semi trailer. Truck is not leased to any carrier neither hauling any load for anyone.
I'm keeping my CDL and medical card current. I have registration (within a state) for the truck on my name.
I asked in DMV, if I can register this vehicle as private and don't deal with commercial regulations and such and answer was no because of the heavy weight. So therefore I paid 2290 tax on it and provided my private intrastate dot number that no longer in operation to get registration.
My questions are:
- Am I required to stop at weight stations and am I subject of dot inspections, if inspector decided so? Can they ticket me for anything or follow me if I don't stop in one?
- Am I required to follow HOS and get ELD?
- Am I required to follow IRP/IFTA regulations?

If you registered your truck for 55,000 or less you don't have to pay HVUT.
You can buy trip permits for each state for fuel.. then you don't have to file ifta I believe.AlexanderK and peterbilt_2005 Thank this. -
Make sure you cover DOT, Ifta sticker and MC# . Get towaway or driveway permits per state. You can call ahead and buy or buy at scales.

You would need to register 54,999# and stay just below.AlexanderK Thanks this. -
I appreciate your responses. Truck + trailer weight around 29000. DMV wouldn't proceed without HVUT tax, so I had to pay it either way, but I don't mind.
I will put NOT FOR HIRE PRIVATE USE ONLY on the side. My decals for intrastate are magnetic so it won't be an issue just to take them off and it will be no stickers of any kind.
I saw somewhere that for less then 7 days a month I could run with paper logs.
My main concern is could I just pass through all weight stations without stopping there (legally of course, I don't want them to chase me). -
Putting not for hire means nothing. Just a truck stop counter rumor.
Since your state requires it to be registered as a cmv, it is a cmv. All cmv laws apply. Hos, registration, weight,etc.
As for stopping at weigh stations, it depends. Here is a website which states require what. And remember most states will see it as no diffrent than a paid move.

I emailed this questions to the state DOT and got responses.
- I am required to stop at any open weight stations for weight verifications;
- I'm not subject to DOT inspections;
- I'm not required to have any marking on my side doors;
- I'm not required to follow HOS rules if I'm not operating commercially.
Just wanted to post, if anyone else has same concerns.
I will probably just get insurance, remove any and all stickers/markings and get my paper log book just in case other states decide to challenge it (I'm not sure how would they do anything without dot numbers and such, but still).xsetra Thanks this. -
