They use the "per million travel miles" metric. No doubt crash frequency is higher today (in raw numbers) but if you factor in vehicle miles traveled, accident rates are lower. I suspect these reports may be dealing in DEATH rates which no doubt have improved due to vehicle safety items like air bags.
If we were driving the same cars and trucks today and with the same highway safety standards we had in the 70's, but had today's traffic count, we'd be dying at phenomenal rates.

These accidents are occurring like this because drivers are tailgating and not paying attention...since when did that load become so important that causing a major wreck is needed?...i see these trucks maybe a 1/2 a car length off other trucks and 4 wheelers. .I'm more concerned with the idiots in the big trucks anymore than the 4 wheelers ..

Everyone wants to blame the driver when you have good and bad people nomatter the line of work

If somebody drives into the back of stopped traffic on a clear sunny morning, I'm not ever going to excuse that action. I don't care who it is or what they were driving. And if that individual laid claim to the title "professional driver", then that goes double.PacoTaco Thanks this.
