I am in the process of a career change from aircraft mechanic to trucker. I live in the metro area in Minnesota and would like to drive local to be home at night (I have a young family that I like to see). Does anyone have any insight on local small or large companies that are in the area that hire new drivers. I don't really care too much about the pay as I know I have to pay my dues. Thank you for the help and have great night.

Try Schneider Viracon account out of Owatonna. Schneider is somewhat of a pita to work for but this account is good. Pays well, hauling architectual glass. They have at least 4 local positions..maybe more since I left. Local paid min of 900 a week.

If you don't mind manual labor, you can try food or beverage distributors like Coke, Pepsi, Budweiser, Sysco, etc.
They're almost always home at night and on weekends, but there is a fair amount of manual labor involved since you're moving around cases and cases of product. I worked for the local Pepsi bottler about 8 years ago and it paid decent with a $500 per week salary plus a bonus of something like 10 cents per case I delivered and I normally had 9000 - 12000 cases on the trailer, so it was an average of about $100 "extra" per day. Those places typically start really early in the morning, I was in at work by 03:30 most mornings, so if you're not a morning person (I wasn't) then it might not be a good fit.KFMinn Thanks this. -

Thank you all for the input so far. I put in a application/inquiry to Martin Bros. Dist. about their train and drive program but no word yet (don't know how long to wait until I apply again). They look like what I'm looking for, but I'm still open to more suggestions.
