I am in contact with a few schools, all of which, are of course sales people. They have all said that 160 hours of training is required for the D.O.T. regulations. I have found some schools that will train a person in two weeks as long as they have the permit prior to beginning the two week program.
My question: Does anyone know if this is factual information? seems a bit fishy to me since some people have been raised around big rigs, know how to drive them, can pass a driving skills test and a pre-inspection..yata yata yata...AND any company that hires you is going to train you a little bit before they let you loose with a rig...

So, whats the verdict...lets hear it... thanks!!!

as far as i know (and i could be wrong) there is no law or regulation as to the number of hours spent in training. However MOST companies will require 120+. i do know that i never went to school at all and i drive a truck which is why i believe this to be true. bottom line if you want to be a truck driver the easy way and drive over the road get some sort of schooling as it took me a long time to get in without it!

not all companies that hire you are going to train you a little but, but most yeah. I've also seen the thing about companies wanting you to have the 120+ hours. I haven't looked up any info regarding how to go around the school and start up since I will be going to school myself on monday, but also with schools I think (and hope? lol) the companies that are used to hiring from them know what the students have gone thru, and I think someone mentioned that some wont touch you if you havent attended a... PDTI? certified school.

There is NO DOT requirement for training . Tell the BS'ers telling you that to fax the regulation to you . FMCSA is working on proposed training . The requirement won't go into effect until 3 years after the final rule is issued and it has yet to be issued .

I know the CR England class is two weeks. If they can pack 160 hours in two weeks then those poor students would be so overwhelmed that that lease agreement would just go right over their head.

There is DOT rule about how many training hours you must complete. As long as you pass the test. However just about every company out there has a minimum amount of hours and it is usually around 160-180 hours. This is due to their insurance. That is why it is critical to go through an accredited school! Otherwise any Joe blow could go to Penske rent a truck and take the test and get their license but then good luck finding someone to hire you!

Unless something new has been implemented that I'm not aware of, in Ca., for instance, you can go to DMV Monday and get a permit, come back Tuesday with a CDL holder and a truck/trailer, take the written test/skills/road test and leave with a CDL in hand. There are schools that have a 3 day crash course, no classroom, just the bare training to get your CDL. It's the truck companies that want 160 hours of training, not the state. I'm sure most states are like this.

Make sure you VISIT the schools just to see what your money will buy you. I know of one place in Colorado that is a muddy field and a small trailer in the middle of nowhere. The other schools in the area all have a building, classrooms, instructors, etc.
