WHERE exactly is the tread depth measured to constitute it DOT legal > 2/32" ?

A rear tire on my truck looks like the attached pic. Worn out on SOME edges.

Measured in any major tread groove. Drives are 2/32. Steers are 4/32 min depth anywhere measured.

4/32" on steers. 2/32's on anything other than steers in any 3 spots of main thread. But it's time to take them off. Get wheel bearings checked and adjusted. Put a closed shoulder tire back on unless your off road.

So, that inner tire with the edges worn down is shot.

I'm trying to get my boss (that sits next to the copying machine) to squirt some pennies out his butt and get the tires replaced.

I would Rotate that pair of tires.inner to out.
That might smooth out the edge wear.
Those tires don't look bad enough to replace.
But then. I spend my money on repairs.

The real answer is it depends on the DOT officer. Your not going to win an argument with them.

Get new and trade in for casing value. Especially if a good name brand tire. No use losing 50 to 60 bucks a tire on its value. Tell the boss to grunt hard. Lol.
