Most of the talk on the forum about CB's for the newbies are about the Cobra 25/29's or Uniden PC68/78's. How does the Midland 5001Z compare to these other radios? I have a chance to buy a new one for $50.00, so could be a deal?

They're nice, low cost radios. Essentially a clone of the Cobra 25. Even at their low price, they've got all the features I look for on an AM-only radio: adjustable mic gain, adjustable RF gain (for receive sensitivity), noise limiter AND noise blanker, and a dimmable display. There are really only a handful of places offshore that make all the radios in today's market anyway. It's no accident it looks like a Cobra :)
They're easy to work on, which is important when the inevitable happens and something needs to get tightened or replaced, or you want some sort of mod done to it.
But they're easily aligned to full output and modulation, and sound good on the air, even with the stock mic. A noise cancelling mic is the only thing I've done to the one I have in my wife's car, and that's only because she drives a Mitsubishi Spyder with the top down a lot.
So yes, $50 is a deal indeed, if nobody has screwdrivered it to death yet.

Im doing some tests on my Midland 5001z & it turns out to be more for a mobile installment then anything else. It doesnt run so well hooked to a base antenna, the hieght of the antenna allows for more incoming signal then what it can handle, so the Rf Gain isn't sure where the limit should be set to. But when used as a mobile radio you really cant beat it. I would say it even would beat a Cobra 29 as far as performance goes. Unlike the newer model Cobra's which come with a cheap, light mike, the 5001z mike is heavy duty, powerful with high modulation running straight stock. I find it fairly hard though when i look around for mods on this particular radio. If anyone has any idea where i can find a mod, id appreciate it. Hope this helps, this is the Reaper signing out with 73's to all.

I have also had a great experience with my Midland 5001z. Running stock w/ stock mic and a Wilson Magnet antenna. Sounds great, and one person thought I was running a base station. Another almost wouldn't believe that I was using a "little radio." Purchased in 2011 and still running strong! Someone complained about the 9001z (essentially the Cobra 29) having issues where turning one knob dragged the other when multi-knobs were used (like inner volume and outer squelch), but I have not had any issue.

The Cobra 29 and Uniden PC 78 are equivalent.
.The Cobra 25, Uniden PC 68 and Midland 5001Z are basically the same.
.The compact radios like the Cobra 19 and Midland 1001Z are pretty much the same.
