Hello everyone. I have been lurking for a few weeks and I have been enjoying the content. Quality forum, so thank you.
I have tossed around the idea of getting my CDL for a while now and have done numerous bouts of research, but the most recent has been the longest and I feel I have as much clarity as a noob will get. In my school research in the past of course I have success in finding some, but I find it hard to really compile a handful of them within an acceptable range and with enough info to to feel confident to slap the cash down.
I am an internet sleuth and for some reason there just isn't much quality information for me to compile and weigh in my area. Lots of sites list schools no longer open, it's a real crap shoot it seems. I spend an unhealthy amount of time on the internet so I don't need you to to do the work for me, but I do feel some here would be the best place to ask for advice.
What schools in Michigan and more specifically in the Lansing/Battle Creek/Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo area would you recommend and why?
I am looking at the owner/operator route so job placement isn't a factor for me although I may find something local to gain some experience real quick before I buy a truck. I did drive 5 ton in the Army many years ago, not daily or anything. I have lots of comments and questions but they are meant for other categories, so you will be hearing from me. Thanks for any and all advice/info.

I'm not sure if they still offer it, but I got my CDL through LCC. Classes were held at Ft Custer. That was in 2004 so I have no idea what may have changed since then.

I am just South of Lansing, was wanting to get around a long drive for school if possible but of course if it's worth it. I am looking into them now. I did have one I contacted a while back, I need to check my email to remember their name. -

Check local community colleges. Also check for a grant to pay for school. Programs usually available through Unemployment Office. Whatever they call it now on line, or find info from schools. Just try to avoid owing a big $6k loan.

Find the place you want to work before you decide ANYTHING about CDL school. Your goal is a good job, not ANYTHING related to the school. The school is a minor requirement on the way to a god job. You would NOT recommend your guy friend obsesses on getting the best price, most convenient date on the calendar, most value for your money when getting married and then just randomly pick some woman up on the way to that wedding and marry her. Focus on the long-term goal. The good job may pay for CDL school for you. The good job may only accept newbies from certain CDL schools or CDL schools with certain qualifications, etc.
About half of the trucking companies that hire newbies offer Tuition Reimbursement TR to new drivers. You may have cash in your pocket now and it may make a lot more sense to take out a loan for CDL school because the good job WILL NOT pay you TR if there is no outstanding loan. Find the job first that matches what you need AND THEN decide about CDL school.
Here are a few posts of mine for newbies to read.
