My company is looking at getting new used western star trucks with mercedes 450 hp and 13 speed. I have heard good and bad with the mercedes the years their looking at are 07 and up. My question is how reliable are these engines? and also what gear ratio should they be looking at with the 13 speed? We do local stuff always 80,000 plus and some hills. Also what is the torque of the 450 mercades ive heard they only go up to 1550? any info on western star or mercades would be appreciated thanks

I have an '06 western star 4900FA with the MBE4000 motor. I have no complaints about the truck, it's quiet, well insulated and not a squeek or rattle in it. The motor is a love hate relationship, at times it seems underpowered but they can get decent mileage. I would say see if the dealership will let you use a truck or two for a few days to a week to see how you get along with it and decide from there. As far as the torque/power on the mercedes there's a few places that sell tuners/programmers for them as well as having the ECM flashed although some people dont recomend doing this.

Ok thanks what gear ratio would you reccomend for a 13 speed. We rarely travel interstate most of the time we run 2 lane roads around 60 mph.

I've got lo pro 22.5 rubber with 3:42 gears and a 13 speed and it seems to pull it just fine in overdrive altho there are times I run it in Direct if there's a headwind or a hard pull. Even today with a 40mph side wind grossing out at 86,000lbs I still averaged 6.0 MPG which I didn't think was to bad considering the wind, terrain and alot of stop and go driving on two lane roads and through towns.
