I'm looking for some help on better understanding an owner operator's options for medical insurance. I'm not a driver but rather to help a mid-sized Texas based trucking company improve their insurance offering to their owner operators.
I have helpd previous companies offer group medical products through the 4 major insurance carriers still left in Texas to their 1099 contractor workers, but it was a completely different industry. So here are my questions:
Are owner operators almost always (or even always) 1099 contractors, which are contracted to work for ABC Trucking company?
If so, as a 1099 contractor, does anyone on this thread get a Group medical insurance plan offered to them through the company their contracted with?
There are a lot of associations and even employers that offer "mini-medical" plans which are VERY watered down versions of a traditional medical plan offered through employers (deductibles, copays, no maximum or cap, etc...). However, I'm having a difficult time finding out if any (or many) trucking companies offer a major medical plan through their employer to their owner operator drivers.
Also, anyone can go to BCBS, UHC, etc... and get insurance on their own, but it's a watered down version of what's available through employers and sometimes is more expensive. I'm really looking to understand your options through the actually company you're contracted with.
I VERY much appreciate the help here. I really am trying to help the masses if it's doable.

I have never seen a lease company offer any kind of insurance. I have five employes when I called around nobody offered a good policy with just five people. With just me and my wife best price I was told was $680 a month.....that's what my house note is!!

I've never heard of anybody offering anything like this. I don't understand why OOIDA can't put a real group plan together, but then I don't understand why OOIDA fails to do a lot of things.

As Independent Contractors, Carriers cannot offer group insurance. Been that way forever. Carriers can offer it to their employee drivers, but not their IC drivers.

Yea, OOIDA does not have group health insurance. Its all individual.
I was surprised at that too.

I just went through humanaOne. 85 a month. Depends on where you live and what u want. I dont go the doctor much so I went with the best monthly rate. Thats also single person plan. But ya no insurance is cheap. I used the local independent insurance agency to find the best one for me so you might give that a shot.

Thank you to everyone for your responses as they help a lot. Bobtail makes a great point that medical insurance (group or individual) does vary vastly from state to state and to a certain degree, even within a state.
In Texas, BCBSTX will do group medical products for 1099 contractors but I haven't confirmed it yet if they view trucking any differently. I have a non-trucking client (medical) that is on BCBSTX and we offer group medical to the 1099s as well as the W2s. We just have to stay consistent with the offering.
I guess I get the impression that maybe only really large trucking outfits offer group medical plans to their owner operators? Can anyone weigh in on this?

I am with the largest all O/O company in the country and they do not offer any type of health insurance to their IC, group or individual. It has been asked about often and management cites IRS rules on employees and Independent Contractors.

Most state insurance laws forbid "group" policy on a collection of individuals except for employees. The few states that do allow it require the "group" to be residents of the state.
