I got my CDLs just incase my regular job fell through. I did work part time driving locally for a while. About six months ago I received a letter in the mail saying I had x amount of days to renew my medical card. I never did. Now I’m thinking I should have. I live in TN. Does this mean I have to retest or can I just get my medical card updated?

The rules may have changed, but a few months ago, you could simply get a new physical and your cdl was good to go again if you registered it with the DMV.
Where are you from in Tennessee? I'm from Robertson County; 20 minute drive from Nashville.

Thank you good sir. I’m located in the Memphis area. I’d love to move middle or east Tn but I’m unable to right now.

I'm not sure. The best advice I can give is to go speak to somebody at the state DMV. Not all the states handle this the same way!

I understand. I sold my house and moved to Las Vegas/Henderson.
Nashville is nice though. I also like Renegade Mountain.

If the incident was less than 12 months ago you may be able to just submit another self-certification form and keep your CDL. Fill out this form and email or fax it to the state. TN Self-Certify Form If you select Option 2 at this form you don't have to keep a current DOT medical card. Without the current valid DOT medical card you also can't use your CDL but it is still live.

Please call the DMV and ask if providing a new DOT medical card will reinstate your CDL. If they say "yes" submit the form I linked above, with Option 2 checked. Then wait a few days and do the following, call and talk to the state to verify they have your new self-certification. Email and ask they verify your new self-certification is in your record. YOU CANNOT RELY ON JUST ONE MEANS OF PROOF. I had TN verify my new DOT medical card and then I got a letter from them several months later saying my CDL was going to be revoked for out of date DOT medical card. You want written proof they have your new info. Keep that written proof with you if you ever use your CDL or you could be arrested for driving on a revoked CDL. and remember YOU CANNOT USE YOUR CDL WITHOUT THE CURRENT DOT MEDICAL CARD. Or you can keep getting a new DOT medical card and submitting it to the state. Either way will keep your CDL valid, if not usable for CDL activities. Don't forget to get 2 assurances from the state they have your new self-certification form in your file.

I’ve never heard of “updating” a medical card.. I’d say it’s time for a new physical/med card.

There are 2 ways to maintain a valid CDL if you are not actively using it for CDL activities. 1) You can keep paying for and getting a new DOT medical exam/card, and then submit a Self-Certification Form (SCF) to the state. Or, 2) you can submit a new Self-Certification Form to your state. Fill out the SCF with your info and mark one of the 4 options which do not require you have a current DOT medical exam/card. In my state there are 2 of the 4 options describing how you use, or expect to use your CDL, which do not require you maintain a DOT medical exam/card. Here is the link to that form. Marking Option 2 on that form and submitting it to the state will not require you keep a valid DOT medical exam/card on file with the state. It also means you cannot use your CDL to operate a commercial vehicle except in accordance with the requirements listed in Option 2. If you are only using your CDL to drive your personal vehicle for personal activities you can choose to pay the cost of a new DOT exam/card every year or two, or just submit a new SCF to your state.

Even if you get a new DOT medical exam/card you must still submit a new Self-Certification Form, a copy of your long form, and copy of your medical card to your state, online or in person. If you don't submit a SCF after your most recent DOT medical exam/card your state will downgrade your CDL to a private passenger vehicle license, may state calls it a Class C license after some amount of time.
