hello everyone i was wondering if you guys could give me your opinion on the CAT C15 MBN engine?? was looking at a 03 pete 379 at a dealership in ohio with 1.1 million miles but not familiar with the engine. says it’s been overhauled by the dealership. i do know the 6nz was a better engine. any way to improve the mbn?... does anyone have one already??? any feedback would be much appreciated. thanks

That is the worst engine Cat ever made. It's called a Bridge motor, just do a google search and you will want to stay far away from it.

Not quite...sdp takes the title, by a mile

Mbn can be converted to 6nz with different turbo and the correct tune. How to accomplish this, I couldn't point you in the right direction. There used to be a guy here Mr. Haney he knew everything about cats, but he is no longer a member here. Might try @superhauler @wore out and look through old threads. I'm sure the information you need is around here somewhere.

A MBN in stock form is short on power and mileage sucks. If you tune it with the right file and put on a different turbo it will run just fine.

Make sure you get a breakdown of the overhaul and make sure they didn't do a half ### job. Good luck

That seems kind of high. Is the truck in good shape? Paint and frame free of rust?

it looks in great shape 10/10. very well taken care of. the only thing that worries me is the engine. i offered 55k on it and they didn’t want to take it. if it had the 6nz i would buy it in a heart beat.

It don't look too bad in pictures. If a guy was there in person you could really check it over with a fine tooth comb. Sometimes they paint them up good to cover hidden problems, such as the frame. You want to look for frame jacking but I don't see any in the pics.

I imagine they want a lot because of the rebuild and that is a pre-emission engine.

What do you think @wore out?

Reflash it and go. No need for a different turbo unless you want every last bit of power. Doesn't pull quite as good as a 2ws/6nz but gets a little better fuel mileage in my experience. I have a reflashed 2004 475mbn in my 2000 truck after my 550hp 2ws spun a rod bearing. Its been in 4 years now and no issues to speak of.
