Hello everybody, hoping someone can help me out and stop the financial hemorrhaging I've experienced for months!
I have a 2012 International Durastar 4300 6.4 L MaxxForce 7 engine and this is what has happened so far:
Driving along the highway, and engine starts to derate. Just a sudden loss of power. So I took it in to have it looked at.
Dealer couldn't find any faults. I left it at that. A few days later I decided I wanted the DPF cleaned. So they removed DPF, tested, cleaned, re-tested. Still having power loss issues, and the truck continues to derate approximately 110 KM/H. So I took it back in.
Now I'm told EGR Cooler is coked up. So EGR Cooler, turbo outlet gasket replaced (due to leak found after).
Truck derating continues. Take it back in, and CAC Pipe replaced.
New issue occurs. Derating and now oil leaking! According to invoice UVC harness, 12 PIN UVC harness, crank filter, engine breather filter assembly, fuel rail pressure sensor, valve cover and/or gasket, electronic engine control sensor/regulator all replaced.
Truck still derating. Oil sprays all over left side of engine. Serpentine belt, front crank seal, tensioner replaced. Thinking its finally fixed, the truck starts emitting bluish exhaust smoke and oil is burning too! DPF ultimately fails. Dealer tells me this needs to be replaced!
Now I'm frustrated. I go ahead with a DPF/EGR delete. Oil continues to burn. Told PCV breather is faulty. Finally, truck works. But short lived. A few weeks later, truck derates, and oil burns again. Truck overheats, and warning lights come on. Fault codes that come up are: SPN 0 FMI 0, SPN 100 FMI 1, SPN 2630 FMI 16, SPN 829 FMI 0.
I'm being told I have a dead cylinder, hence the oil burning issue. I don't know why it took so long to get to this point, but I'm looking for some advice on what to do. This has become extremely costly and not sure if a new engine is viable at this point. Any suggestions?
Maxxforce 7 Ongoing trouble (that no one can fix)

Wow, man. I feel your pain.

Ok, there is no spn 0, or 829. You need to double check those. 100-1 is low oil pressure, 2630 is charge air cooler undercooler, or too hot of air in intake manifold. Both of these will cause derates. Any time there is a performance problem, the dealer should be taking the truck for a road test to duplicate the complaint and recording a 0-60 snapshot with a computer to see what is going on. Did they do any of this? From this snap shot you can see if the derate is due to low boost, or high exhaust restriction, fuel pressure issues or intakes temps and so on. Now, I have to be absolutely honest, this engine is complete garbage. Out of all the Maxxforce family engines, we replace this one, by far, more than any other model. International gave up on it and no longer makes it. Replacement engines are not different or upgraded. They are just reman complete units that will also fail eventually too. All this engine is good for is use in a school bus for only a couple of hours per day. That's it! I would recommend to cut losses and get something else.
soultrader, montrose818, BoxCarKidd and 2 others Thank this. -
In 2013 over a few months I did something like 10 of these motors. Not many international dealers in the world are going to invest the tech time and complete a 0-60 snap shot with servicemaxx to see what is going on.
You know what I have seen a lot with the motors from my two buddies who still work at navistar, that cylinder bore will enlarge. When you remove the cylinder head you can take your hand and move the piston back in forth in the bore itself. If your motor is using oil you may have the beginning stages of this issue. How sure are you that your turbo's aren't sucking the oil out? I have seen plenty of failed turbos on these motors, and a whole lot of dual stage setups that are pushing oil.
When the motor isn't derating does it have good power?
p.s. I no longer am employed by a navistar dealer, I am at freightliner, I got tired of the navistar trucks and motors crazy problems, and a tendency for warrantied repairs to get ridiculous base on what the engineering department would tell the service techs. -
0-60 snapshot literally takes 18 mins for me to go out and record. Not a big deal. I find most techs ignore them because they actually don't know how to read one.
wore out, AModelCat and cumminskid123 Thank this. -
That is true, I have done snap shots, and also know how to read them, that being said, efficiency was and is a huge deal to my former dealer, my boss would talk about how we were 6 dollars a minute. If a tech wanted to take a snap shot, they would probably have to keep it to themselves as they may get a little verbal hostility for doing so on a cash job.

Heavyd: My apologies. I may have gotten some of the codes wrong. I don't have the ServiceMaxx software, and am only able to do the cruise control button method. I did take some quick pictures of the codes that came up (sorry for the poor quality; I was in a rush!)

Buy a truck that is too stupid to derate anything. That means old iron plus whatever you need to do to comply with the draconian rules.
In my day engines gave you x amount of horsepower all the time unless a piston broke or something. This derating bull is chapping me. And eating your money, enough.
I say dump the tractor, find another good one. -
Sorry Gordy, I cannot read any of those.
Jeep, yes I know, we are expensive too, not anywhere near your rate, but still. With hourly rates skyrocketing, nobody wants anyone to actually dig in and figure anything out anymore. Most trucks that need engines are under warranty so we have to follow the SRT's and warranty approval guides to get paid. Not much profit though.x1Heavy Thanks this.
