This looks like a product that could change our ability to switch from diesel powered to electric powered APUs

    http://www.maxwell.com/products/ultracapacitors/products/engine-start-module

The inability of electric APUs to run long enough to cover a real 10 to 12 hour break is their biggest drawback. If this module can start a truck after discharging the batteries it would allow an electric APU to be used with a bank of 4 independent batteries plus three of the main batteries providing extended operation time of the APU by about 75% without worry of needing a jump start. A 4 AGM battery bank is included in most electric APU prices. 3 more in the main bank would cost around $600 to $700. This module costs $995. At a dollar an hour for diesel powered APU fuel it wouldn't take long to recover the investment into this module and batteries. No more APU breakdowns or maintenance required.

Any input on this thought? Anyone have experience with this ESM?

It's a capacitor. It gives a good amount of energy for a brief period then needs to be recharged. I think they recharge rather quickly though.

It's not a battery so the cold doesn't affect it.

I recently got one at Freightliner for 700.00 off the shelf. I'm trying to reduce my idle expenses but I've got an inverter running a stove, big screen TV, coffee pot, DVD etc. I end up idling to keep my batteries up even when I don't need heat or AC. It took 3 tries for their shop to install it correctly because most of their mechanics had never heard of this thing. To their credit they did not charge me for the last 2 even though the install required a lot more work than Maxwell claims in their instructions. In my case the module replaces one of my 4 batteries. It charges off the batteries but is the only connection to the starter. All other loads are segregated so the 3 remaining batteries run only accessories, not the starter. According to the specs this thing will charge at 9 volts and 25 amps. I tested it over the weekend by leaving my headlights and other accessories on for several hours until my meter was at less than 11 volts with a low voltage signal flashing on the dash. Turned the key and truck started immediately. So far it has worked flawlessly. If my inverter wakes me up with a low voltage warning because I fell asleep with the TV and lights on, I turn the key, the truck starts, and the batteries charge up. I figure if it saves me some significant idle time, and occasional jump starts it will pay for itself eventually in fuel, cash, time and aggravation.
Their website is not the greatest and the install will probably take more than the one hour shop time they claim but so far I've found it to be a good investment.

Markvfl, Sean at Maxwell and mgrantes Thank this.

I was intersted in one since I seen them at the truck show, nice to hear some real feed back
How long will it crank before you have to let it cycle / recharge?
persay you changed your injectors and had reprime your fuel system?
