I just got my CDL a few weeks ago and Ive been doing a lot of research trying to decide what company to start off with. I really like Maverick and dont think I want to go anywhere else. I filled out my application online and called the recruiter. The only issue is that I got fired from a job that was non trucking related a couple of months ago (I left the property while on the clock) and since Maverick asks for the last 3 years of employment history I had to include this job in my application and put that I was terminated. When I talked to the recruiter everything seemed to be going fine until he saw my employment history. I was honest with him and explained to him that I was terminated, I didnt tell him specifically why but he told me that I didnt qualify for the job because of my termination. I dont see what this job has to do with Maverick since this was a non trucking related job and then he said I need to wait a year and to apply again to see if a qualify. Im just really disappointed because Im currently unemployed and was really looking forward to working with Maverick. I dont know if I can talk to my ex manager and see if she can put in a good word for me but at the end of the day she is still going to say I was terminated. Im not sure what to do, do all companies look at this as grounds for rejecting an application?
Maverick wont hire me because of termintation

Some co's don't care, some do. Check around, you'll find something.

my guess would be the new cdl is main reason .thats why he said try again in a year

You should've just put down that you worked for them and you quit they don't ask for specifics when they contact your prior employer just for dates you worked there. I worked for maverick and I was fired from my last job before I started trucking and I put down that I quit and never been questioned about it from any company that I worked for.

I wanted to be honest with them because I wasnt sure if they were going to call my employers and didnt want it to come back and bite me in the butt. Thanks for the advice though, Im going to try that with the next companies I apply for.
fr8te_sh8ker and tacomaruss Thank this. -

Trucking companies put out $3-4K to hire a new driver. They don't want to hire someone that will quit them right away. That's what you demonstrated to them. This one will quit us the first time he gets mad. Trucking gets so many new drivers the turnover rate is astounding.
There are ways around it. Since it's not a trucking job and pre-career you can omit that job. You can fill that gap with a lie (I didn't tell you that). lol
Put on the application you worked building houses or some other residential construction job during them dates. There are many crews out there that subcontract and have no real structure of a business. Then for verification give them your friends phone number and have him tell them you did work for him. That might be the end of that or they might ask him to sign a form with the dates and you all email it back and forth unless you have access to a fax.
The other option is have your neighbor or so called neighbor sign and notarize a piece of paper stating you were unemployed them dates.
In other words make it where that job didn't exist on paper. The main purpose of this background check is to satisfy DOT regulations that you never had a trucking job or CDL. They don't want people hiding old CDL suspensions and stuff before the computer days. They could care less you quit a factory or such but a company judges your character by that.
Once you become a driver it's a different story.
If you easily get mad about pay or how they treat you, you'll have a hard time making it through the first year. It takes 1-3 years to start making the good money. You will be treated like a dog at times, you will have some McDonald's paychecks. Truckers that survive and thrive in the industry have thick skin. There is a path of earning your stripes you have to make it through. Once you get through your first year the grass is greener on the other side.
I don't normally tell people stuff like this so you better stick it out if you try. Otherwise you'll be working at Long John Silver's making $200 a week. Not to mention the grease burns.jpineapple99 and hismith Thank this. -
Come on folks don't tell this guy to lie. Then he has a whole new set of problems. Put out a bunch of applications and you will get a bite. If you are sent home from orientation. Some companies will make you pay your own way back or even put it on your DAC report you falsified your application.
Some applications will ask if you have ever been terminated from a job, and Why. You don't really have to give them the full story. You can say violated company policy. Where do you live? Sometimes companies use that as an excuse not to hire you and will say its because of something else.
Try JBS Carriers, Swift, Prime, Werner, Stevens Transport. Also I always thought you had to list 10 years of employment. Guess things have changed.bigtssa Thanks this. -
Just dont put that job. Say you were taking care of grnadma or grandpa for that time and thats it

Being terminated from 1 job is not going to hurt you. I was terminated from my 1st trucking job for fighting with my co-driver and I have had plenty of jobs since then. I was on the bus the next day to go to another company and I only had 4 months experience. So don't start lying because the company you applied for is picky. They could have tons of newbies and not enough trainers so that could be another excuse they could of had, but said instead it was something wrong with your application.
