Possible? Yes. Legal? No.

You can't remove emissions equipment fromm a vehicle. If you repower the vehicle, the "new" power plant needs to meet the same standards as the "old" engine that was certified by the manufacturer to meet the emissions standards at the time of manufacture. Gliders are chassis that did NOT have an engine installed by the manufacturer, and they are supposed to contain 2 of the 3 drive line components from the SAME "donor" truck...engine, transmission, drive axles. Basically, it is a concession to allow an engine that is already on the road to get wrapped up in a new package and remain on the road...NOT to replace a "clean" engine with an older one.
If you do swap an old engine into a new truck in place of the newer engine, the EPA views it the same as disabling the emissions components on that newer truck...and IF caught, it'll be expensive.

Can a guy go the other way, say I have a 2010 KW T660 but want to buy a W900 glider and swap my 2010 motor and tranny into it, drive train, axles and diffs possibly, is that something they do?

Questions: Say you have a 2010 KW T660 with a 2010 engine. The engine is damaged beyond repair or rebuild. You replace it with a pre-2003 Detroit series 60 12.7. How will EPA know you did an engine swap? How can they prove your 2010 KW T660 came with a 2010 engine? How can they prove your T660 wasn't a glider and didn't originally come with the Detroit 12.7? Is there some sort of "National Glider Database"?
Further, what if I have a 2010 T660 and replace its original 2010 engine with a pre-emissions engine? Then, I sell the truck to a third person (you), and I verbally inform you it is a glider and can legally have a pre-emissions engine. How will you know the truck can legally have the older engine? -
Don't worry about the EPA no one checks to see if your truck has an engine swap or you did a pittsburg power and disabled or removed any emission stuff..calif might be the only one that would look at an engine

Looked at getting plates for my truck a few years back. At DMV in California the guy came out and wrote down the engine serial number and filed it with the VIN number in the database.

Yes, not sure but thought I read somewhere you may even qualify for some kind of tax credit or something for doing this if you use the emissions stuff if it's an older truck your buildingscottied67 Thanks this. -
