Hello everyone i've been looking for LTL loads on several boards to start running 24' box truck. I'm willing to haul long distance to anywhere. What i don't get is how can one make money if the LTL rates are $1 per mile or less. Do brokers expect me to look for additional loads in the same area from someone else to get to the 1.80 - $2 average. This is almost impossible to do considering logistics and pickup and delivery dates if several loads are involved.
My truck gets same miles per gallon as big rig, how can i possibly make it with such small rates for LTL.
Thank you in advance for your opinion and help!

That's just how it is. Brokers don't care if you make anything. Another thing - if there's no flexibility on pick up and delivery times - then it's not LTL. You should have several days flex if need be to string several together. If they're telling you it must pick today and deliver tomorrow that is a full truckload even if it's only a shoebox of freight. Really without any sort of real work lined up for that 24' box truck you should probably just sell it. Loadboards are no place to try and make money with small trucks. Truckload is at least do-able to make a great living off loadboards even though it can be a challenge.

I agree with the above, you need some time for pick up and delivery to be able to put together a few pkgs of freight. I'd stick to regional work, I don't see how you'd make much with a box truck going long haul. The LTL cross country trips in a 53 foot trailer will get the bills paid. -
I have a full sized truck and flatbed and have done LTL loads maybe 4 times. It's REALLY hard to put it together but can pay out big time. The problem is most people want their stuff delivered like your dedicated to their load and that doesn't work very well.

Many times LTLs pay worse than truckload. There is a forklift shipper out of the SF bay area always posting 1 forklift to various midwest & NE cities. You could actually get a full truckload multi-stop trip out of there, but at $500/ea you'd eat your shorts running to OH or PA for $2000...

I hauled one skid steer from KY to CA for about $1.50 per mile for Landstar. No delivery deadline and kept filling up trailer with LTL on the way. Ended up at $4.00 per mile for the whole trip. I was 5 minutes away from delivering and Landstar called and said bring it back. They didn't tell me why. Did the same thing on the way back. Wasn't as lucky with LTL on the return trip.
